Buckhurst Hill fixtures confirmed for 2007

With grateful thanks to our Lifetime Fixtures Secretary Kim, we have confirmed our traditional pair of fixtures versus Buckhurst Hill Cricket Club for Sunday 27 May 2007 and Sunday 9 September 2007. Let's hope we actually play both fixtures this season.

Dodgers Player Profiles - Matt Leach

Website founder/guru Matt is another member of Dodgers' Tyke Triangle and the side's lone regular spinner. Not that he turns it much, mind. His idea of a leg trap is deep fine leg, deep backward square leg, deep mid-wicket etc, all of whom ought to wear helmets, and some deliveries are so high they interfere with the radar at Heathrow.

An improving batsman and fielder (with plenty of scope to do so), he represents the Senior Civil Service in the squad, though is quite human despite that.

Domestic duties mean that Matt hasn't played since 2004 which was good news for us but bad news for our opponents who relished his slow non-spinning spin bowling.

Matt supports Leeds United and likes real ale so he's OK with me.

Dodgers Player Profiles - John Doyle

Arguably the founder of Dodgers, Doyleee is an institution. Or should be in one. Agreeing to accept life membership a few years back if he retired, he showed all the modesty and consistency you'd expect of someone who supports Surrey and Manchester United by carrying on playing. Has produced with both bat and ball on occasions when his long-term knee injury permits.

A brief history of Buckhurst

Read the match reports from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 plus the
2003 multimedia gallery.

Dodgers grind out traditional end of season Buckhurst Hill draw. Dodgers sealed the traditional end of season draw at Buckhurst Hill as predicted rain came...

Controversy abounds this morning following our failure to beat Buckhurst Hill yesterday. The selectors have sensationally failed to drop Carr or Matthews...

We have secured incoming video evidence of last week's draw against Buckhurst Hill at their place.

More reports from Sept 2004, May 2004, and Dodgers @ Buckhurst Hill , 4 September 2005. Match report by Simon Cousins : Sweltering heat and a slow , low wicket combined to produce a soporific draw...

Pressure cricket
Dodgers' season ended with a hard-fought draw at Buckhurst Hill yesterday. In reply to their 182-4 we were clinging on at 128 - 8 when time ran out.

This year's May fixture was rained off (but not before we got to the ground!) so let's hope for a fine day.

21 June 2006

Dodgers v English Heritage @ Chiswick

Dodgers lost their 3rd straight game – again narrowly as in the previous two cases.

Capt Carr won the toss and elected to bat first in cold and extremely windy conditions on an OK looking deck but with huge side boundaries as seems to be the permanent trait with the ‘A’ pitch. With Priest running late, Lee and Qureshi opened the innings and made a decent start before Lee was adjudged LBW by Umpire Cousins. Qureshi was joined by McB and the pair added 67 in 12 overs before McB was bowled off his pads. Although there were very few dot balls there was also an absence of boundaries and McBs run a ball 32 failed to contain a single boundary.

Qureshi who had been dropped three times (including an absolute dolly) followed a couple of overs late for a useful 33. Priest played some nice shots in a cameo of 19 before being castled by a good one and JC wiped over a straight one to the same bowler and was trapped in front. There was just enough time for new boy Peirce and very old boy Matthews to nurdle a few singles before the innings ended on 118 (extras, especially wides, contributing a very useful 20 to this total).

The consensus was that with the good deck but long boundaries 125 was a par score so Dodgers had come up just short of this. The innings was slightly marred by an over-competitive attitude from some of the EH fielders and the unnecessary exchange of one or two words. The EH ground fielding was generally very good with a number of excellent stops but they also dropped several catches (Tawhid the main beneficiary) which may have blackened their mood.

EH started steadily against some decent bowling from Cousins and Cooper (the former typically impressive and the latter coping well bowling uphill into the gale). Although wickets proved elusive (Cooper snaring one of the openers with an assist from Priest) they kept things tight and EH were slightly behind the clock after 8 overs. Hilary also bowled tightly but Lee and Fox (despite bowling some good balls) were not quite as consistent and the run rate accelerated.

EH had reached 104-1 after 17 overs and with only 15 needed, two well set batters and 9 wickets in hand the game looked over. Hilary then snared opener Slatford for a well made 52 and his replacement for a duck and the score was 107-3 at the end of 18 (13 needed off 2). The 19th over bowled by Lee was remarkable and included three wickets – a good straight one to trap Hashan for 35 and two further wickets courtesy of good catching assists from Hilary and Fox. Unfortunately, the over also contained the shot of the night (an exquisite straight six off a perfectly decent ball) and a beamer that went for 4 wides. With Griffiths also hitting the last ball of the over for a boundary EH had crossed the line by 4 wickets.

Overall a close game between two well matched sides and no need for a major inquest. Dodgers probably needed another 10 runs or one more front line bowler (where are Benn’s pies when you need them?!) and in the final analysis EH were able to hit several more boundaries than we managed.

Let us hope for a return to winning ways against MOD next week but they are likely to prove formidable opposition.

Dodgers won by 1 wicket

Dodgers Off To A Winning Start

Match report by TQ

The Dodgers recorded a win on their first outing of the season last night, with a regulation victory over an Audit Commission side containing a customary mixture of regular players, not so regular players, and those who turned up to catch some sun on the hottest day of the year so far. Having won the toss, stand in skipper Priest chose to bat on a typically green looking early season wicket which contrary to appearance offered low bounce and little assistance to the bowlers of either side.

The opening pair of Priest and Qureshi both reached the retirement score of 25 without major alarm, aided by bowling which was as disciplined as John Prescott would be if stuck in a lift at a Secretary's Convention. However, Qureshi was notably dropped at the start of his innings by Dodgers debutant Lee whilst fielding for the opposition, wisely choosing not to reprise the role that John Hilary has made his own over the last few seasons.

The other Dodgers debutant, Dollin, played a cameo innings of 16 before being the victim of one of three good catches taken by the Audit skipper. McBarron batted down the order at 6 but unlike Flintoff the England number 6, he accumulated a number of singles and the pavilion roofing was never at risk from damage.

McBarron and Lee created a solid partnership which stabilised the innings, and helped the Dodgers to an eventual healthy total of 147 for 3, the innings was actually declared after 18 overs - very possibly a first in Dodgers evening matches - due to the sluggish Audit over rate.

The Audit innings began with an early breakthrough for Cooper who bowled one of the openers for nought, but instead of signalling a procession of wickets, Audit doggedly batted out their 20 overs without ever realistically being on course to overhaul the target, in the end reaching 84 for 4. The Dodgers performed well in the field despite shelling 3 catches, with Priest pulling off an excellent run out with a direct hit from cover point.

The bowling was generally tight if at times unspectacular. Adey's first bowl for nearly a year produced a probing spell with the bat being regularly beaten. Due to the dubious nature of the Audit scoring - which is rather concerning given the nature of their profession - the bowling figures are subject to conjecture, although Cooper, Adey, and Pope all collected a wicket each.

A full scorecard of the game will follow, as will minutes of the last AGM and at least one committee meeting, hopefully at some point during this season!

Next up for Dodgers, a game next week against a team of literally unknowns...

Man of The Match Votes: Adey 4, Qureshi 4, Priest 2.
