Player Profile - Sacha Hatteea

Sacha joined Dodgers in 2009 and quickly excelled as a top class batsman, excellent fielder and decent spin bowler. Realising that this high calibre skills set was unsustainable if he wanted to fit in, Sacha made some clever close season adjustments and returned in 2010 as a top class batsman, excellent fielder and gobshite slow bowler.

The weather and availability frustrated his attempts to register a really big score but this is surely just a matter of time.

Drinks lager and drives a sports car.

Player Profile - Steve Bennett

From the same dynasty as Tony, Gordon, Alan and Phil.

Steve played a handful of games in 2009 but featured more regularly in 2010. A decent seam bowler who delivered some good returns, Steve had few opportunities to show his prowess with the bat.

Only a reasonable fielder but that still places him in the upper quartile of the Dodgers fielding competency matrix.

Player Profile - Paul Redmayne

It's not clear if Paul will play in 2011 as he may have returned to the frozen North East, but he was a very welcome addition to the side in 2010.

Despite looking the part with the bat, it would be fair to say he promised more than he delivered. Had some fair returns with the ball though with his loopy and well flighted spin. An enthusiastic fielder and all round good egg who will be missed.

Player Profile - David Lindsey

David is a welcome new recruit who showed himself to be a very competent and steady bat (a rich man's McB according to some).

We hope to see more of David in 2011 and that he will provide valuable runs and solidity in the upper middle order.

Player Profile - Pete Lee

Pete Lee JrPeter William Lee (no, not that one) was recruited for the 2009 Season and another product of the burgeoning Dodgers Youth Policy. Pete's swashbuckling techneeq saw him put together a few spectacular innings including a notable 40 not out down at Barnes Common early in the season. He scored over 200 runs at just over 20 and his safe hands took 5 catches in the field (second only to The Cat).

A man with a Facebook photo album called "Drinking" has to be admired but what's that strange yellow coloured liquid in Pete's glass in this photo? Apparently it is ale. However, Pete's true beer drinking preferences are really yet to be seen as he is normally the first to disappear after the match and never has any money!

When he's playing for Dodgers in his fifties he will be glad we finally decided to call him Lee (P Jr).

Player Profile - Phil McBarron

Phil was our second-highest runs scorer in 2010 with 339 and bowled the third most overs of any of our bowlers returning a respectable 12 wickets at 25-a-piece. Some great overall performances throughout the season saw Phil finish 4th in the 2010 Player of the Season.

Phil successfully retained his 'Real Ale Drinker of the Year' title for the 16th year in a row.

Player Profile - John Carr

The LegendIn 2009, JC made it to a significant Dodgers milestone (no, he didn't drink 6 pints before a match!) in finally qualifying for the All-Time bowling averages. Bowling just over 12 overs across the season and taking 4 wickets (initially at a very miserly average) this represented a rather grand total.

Throw in a few splendid knocks with the bat, including an unbeaten 32 on the last day of the season and 2 or 3 Man of the Match awards and that's a great season for The Legend.

"Likes an ale and will only drink lager if there is no proper beer, spirits, petrol or distilled urine."™

Player Profile - Tawhid Qureshi

TQ's batting in 2009 had improved vastly on 2008 and he was one of our most consistent players. His big innings came against Tilburg Regions when he carried his bat for 79 and did his fair share of an opening stand of 127 with Mr McBarron.

Rather oddly for one of our better fielders, Tawhid did not take a catch all season. And as for bowling... well let's just say the world was saved from moonballs for another year.

In 2010, TQ didn't play as much and his batting took a bit of step back again and he still didn't take any catches!

Weather: fair

Dodgers 180 for 9 (McBarron 72, Hilary 54) lost to Buckhurst Hill 182 for 4 (Bennett 10-?-53-2) by 6 wickets.

Brief match report by The Cat:

"The first over in the Dodgers innings was exciting: 1wd . . 4 W W W!!! A hat-trick to Bowler Baig which in order was Taylor 4, Radcliffe 0 (golden), Smith 0 (golden). Mr Baig was very pleased and we were stunned. One for the record books perhaps. We thought it was probably unique that the second and third wickets of a hat-trick were brothers both out for goldens. Recovery ensued and we made 180 for 9 thanks to good knocks from McB and Hilary. Unfortunately they then larraped our bowling to all parts and reached the target in about 30 overs."

The McBarron/Hilary partnership for the 6th wicket was a new all-time Dodgers record of 117.

Dodgers Thrill Fans in Night at the Museum

Dodgers Thrill Fans in Night at the Museum - Match Report by Peter Lee Sr

Dodgers and Science Museum arrived at the malarial jungle known as Barnes Common to discover that the pitch curator had decided that it was more than his job was worth to actually prepare or mark out a strip. Undeterred by having paid £30 for the same facilities available in any farmer's field, the two teams opted to play on unprepared pitch that was as patchy as Kamran Akmal’s wicket-keeping. As widely reported in the national media, Captain Carr won the toss and opted to take first use. Science Museum took to the field and specialist cricket ball sniffer dogs were dispatched into the Barnes undergrowth to try and ensure the game finished before midnight.

The fielding side made an early breakthrough when opener Lee, who traded his good batting form for a new son and was clearly questioning the wisdom of the deal, slapped a rank long-hop straight to cover for a duck. When his junior counterpart departed shortly afterwards, Dodgers were 6-2 and looking shaky. An excellent 58 run partnership from the classy Taylor and obdurate McBarron saw Dodgers to a good position at the halfway point. The fact that this was not capitalised upon was due to an intriguing bowling combination of accurate spin from one end and long hops from the other, both of which proved tricky to get away on the dodgy surface and which spared Science Museum from the usual dozen or so trips into the undergrowth to search for lost balls amongst the foliage and dogging couples. When Carr and Cousins scrambled a comedy overthrow off the last ball, it was little remarked upon as the batting side contemplated being 20-30 runs short. It was to prove as crucial as it was amusing.

Science Museum made a solid start with opener Luxford looking particularly dangerous. Lowe got a bit of tap before snaring Levitt, pouched by the ever-reliable Fox at midwicket. Rye was quickly harvested at short third man by Lee Snr off the virtually unplayable Cousins. Lee Snr promptly dropped captain Martis but Taylor showed his usual athleticism, running him out with a direct hit. Luxford continued to bat Science Museum towards a strong position, hitting his final ball for six and retiring. The enigmatic and ever-tardy Raj bowled well to pick up a wicket but the middle-order held firm and defeat for Dodgers looked a racing certainty, despite a great running catch from Taylor and an astonishing second direct hit run out, this time by Lee Snr, the kind of accuracy that would have the England one day side drooling.

With two overs to go, 18 runs were required. With one over to go, 5 runs were required as Fox was agriculturally mown for 13. Hard luck Rob, better luck next time chaps was the general feeling amongst the team. However, onto centre stage strode the phlegmatic Cooper (J) to bowl the last knacker. A couple of singles were comfortably taken, with one curator batsman already celebrating the anticipated win. But then... Cooper chucked one down the legside, the well-set Humphreys' eyes lit up but his big swish only flicked the ball off the leading edge to the Cat who gobbled up the chance. Suddenly, batting bums became squeakier as the Dodgers field closed in claustrophobically. Next ball, Cooper bowled, Wood sliced towards short cover where Lee Snr dived and plucked the cherry as casually as a Spanish waiter at a Club 18-30 resort.

Four runs were taken off the next three balls so, like Hitler, Science Museum were left with only one ball to pursue victory and like the Fuhrer, they failed. Asten mowed nervously, flicking a thick edge behind where it nestled on Cat's gloves, sparking frenzied celebrations from the fielding side.

So, having lost by one run the previous week, that fickle strumpet Fate smiled on the Dodgers, granting them one of the wins of the season. Cooper won the Man of the Match by a landslide for his three wickets in an over with an honourable mention to McB for his excellent 30 on a batting minefield.

Sports Day 2010

Codgers comprising Cooper J, Cousins Dollin, Fox, Hilary, McBarron, Radcliffe lost in the semi-final to Souperstars down at Teddington CC in today's SPARTA Sports Day.

Dodgers meanwhile were unlucky not to qualify from their group following a bye in the first round and then a tight second game.

Various other Dodgers including Rod P, Dave L & P Lee Jr were spotted later engaging in un-Dodgers like activities and we went home happy.

Dodgers v Superstars @ Chiswick 08.07.10

2pm
40 overs
Chiswick
No retirement rule

Dodgers 189 for 2 (Dollin 44, Hatteea 43*, Taylor 42, Lindsey 38*) beat Superstars 187 all out (Cooper J 8-0-46-4) by 8 wickets

Man of the Match: Cooper J - 7.5, Hatteea - 2.5, Cousins - 1

Dodgers lost the toss and were sent into the scorched earth of Chiswick. At the halfway point Superstars were cruising with no wickets down and a hundred runs on the board. However, a well-timed drinks break and the return of McBarron from the Pavilion End saw the demise of Conway thanks to the sharp reflexes of the standing-up Hatteea (in for the Cat behind the stumps). A fierce rising drive by Conway had previously been dropped by Cooper J at cover so it was a relief that this mistake was not too costly.

Change bowlers John Cooper and Rob Fox took up the challenge and it wasn't long until the next wicket fell. JC2 made amends for his earlier drop by neatly taking a low straight caught and bowled to get Gaught for 53. Then, after accidentally slinging one down the leg side to the incoming Crabtree, JC2 was surprised to see it dollied up to Simon Cousins at square leg. Walker at four proved to slightly more dangerous and was scoring freely when he fell to the old legside longhop trick by JC2 and was snagged by a marvellous deep mid-wicket boundary catch by the ever-reliable Radcliffe. Davey at five was then caught by Lindsey at point, again off JC2 and suddenly Superstars weren't looking so good at 148 for 4. Steve Meyler and the behelmeted Mountain were then both run out thanks to good work by Radcliffe and keeper Hatteea (the second one being a direct hit). JC2 was denied a five-for by a JC drop on the long-off boundary but returned a season best 8-0-46-4. Mike Taylor defended stoutly whilst Hughes was lbw to Fox (thank you Umpire Gaught) and a final run-out of Kumar by Hilary/McBarron sealed the deal and the old enemy was all out for 186. A remarkable fielding effort and some generous umpiring on wides meant that there were zero extras in the innings, which is probably the first time this has ever happened in a Dodgers game.

In reply, the in-form Taylor and Dollin opening partnership reply put on 95 before Mike D was neatly stumped for 44 as he charged and missed. Taylor followed soon after (caught Taylor) for 42 soon after but the foundations had been laid. Lindsey (38*) and Hatteea (43*) saw Dodgers home in style for a convincing victory with loads of time to spare.

Weather: Dry, sunny

Dodgers 108 for 3 (Cooper R 26*, Lee P Jr 26*) beat English Heritage 104 for 6 (Cousins 4-0-11-1) by 7 wickets

Man of the Match: Cooper R - 4, Cousins - 3, Lee P Jr - 1

Match report

At a sun-kissed Chiswick, Dodgers faced up to the task of demolishing a piece of our Heritage with unusual sang froid, encouraged by unprecedented good form and another strong line-up. Captain Carr lost the toss and was asked to take the field. Normally, this would be a cause for trepidation but with a bowling line up reminiscent of 2005 Ashes England for its consistency, strength in depth and lack of a decent spinner, the boys donned their baggy blues with confidence and headed out onto the sacred sward.

Their confidence initially looked misplaced as Cooper (R) served up a first over of total dross but both he and human metronome Cousins were soon into their groove. Frankham was snaffled by Lee (Minor) off Cooper, rapidly followed by unsuccessful dairy farmer Cowburn who lost patience with the nagging line and length from Cousins. The Cat plundered a fabulous run out and once Hilary had shown his turn of speed over one yard to snag Mozart’s rival Saleri, Heritage were virtually history at 41-4. A strong and ear-splitting showing by the middle order pushed the batting total towards respectability but late wickets from the unplayable Hilary and Cooper (J) pegged back the charge, with Lowe also excellent and unlucky to stay wicketless. 104 represented recovery of sorts but for a Dodgers batting side who had been dealing in 150+ totals, it always looked a bit short on a great wicket.

Dodgers kicked off the reply with extra helpings of P W Lee as two generations of that name accelerated towards a 25 run opening partnership. Then Lee (Snr) was adjudged caught from a chest high full toss and Radcliffe followed shortly afterwards. The good ship Dodgers appeared slightly adrift but, like the Ancient Mariner, skipper Carr arrived at the crease to place a firm hand on the tiller and turn his weather-beaten features toward the golden horizon of victory. A dogged 21 not out helped Lee (Jnr) to his 26 not out retirement and provided the base for some quality thrashing from Cooper (R). An unfortunate run out of Hilary kept the crowd on the edge of their seats but late biffage from Lowe ensured victory with a handful of balls (fnarr) to spare.

So yet another strong performance from Dodgers, comfortably dispatching a team who it had previously struggled to beat.

Match report by Matt Taylor

Dodgers slew the KAI Dragons on a sunny evening at Chiswick to record their fourth win on the bounce.

Captain Taylor was fully expecting to face a second defeat of the season as he, Dollin and Marr painfully dragged the Dodgers to 38-1 at the halfway point. The Dragons were quick and accurate; the wicket and outfield slow. Attacking intent from Radcliffe was sneered upon as an occasional bowler was brought on to "give us some runs" and the Dodgers limped to 101. Surely a 20 over total too low to defend, in this guns-blazing, six-bashing world.

So it seemed at the 8-over point despite great bowling from Bennett and Cousins as the Dragons' best batsman cruised towards retirement. But then something happened. The Dodgers side came to life and tore into the Dragons' middle order: batsmen swung wildly at the ball; catches were plucked from the air; and bails fell to the Chiswick turf. First, the batsman-to-retire was forced to collect his cricketing pension early as Bennett ran backwards and caught him at mid on. Then, superb spells from Hilary and Lowe were eclipsed by a sensational (and economical) three wickets in four overs from Fox - whose quicker ball brilliantly splayed the stumps of one unfortunate Dragon. This stunning Dodgers defence showed it had everything as Dollin twice whipped off the bails: once for a lightning-quick stumping; and once as a Taylor throw found the Dragons' skipper short of his ground.

Staggering out of this perfect storm with light fading and the run-rate graph towering over him like a giant ash cloud, the last Dragons batsman had no choice but to heave. And heave he did - straight down the throat of Hilary, who clung on to herald another outstanding Dodgers win.

Player Profile - Rob Cooper

Phil McBarron and Rob Cooper - Dodgers v Tilburg Regents @ Chiswick Thursday 13 May 2010Rob Cooper joined Dodgers in 2009 via the TQ/Warwick Castle connection as part of the ongoing Dodgers Youth (i.e. under-40) Policy. He immediately took the eye with his stylish (and highly competent) batting and bowling and sure enough won Best Bowler at a canter. Good things are expected of Rob in 2010.
