Dodgers v Sergei Westhead XI 28.08.12

Chiswick
T20
6pm
Sunny

Dodgers went into the final fixture of the summer perfectly poised, with the season showing 10 wins and 10 defeats to our name. One last internecine affair against an opposition brimming with familiar faces would decide whether Dodgers finished 2012 in credit or in debit overall.

And we won! Sergei's XI posted a decent total, requiring Dodgers to sustain a run rate of 7 an over throughout the chase. We were there or thereabouts all the way through, until a spectacular surge from the bat of 2012 signing Sardar won the game for us in the space of one over (including a magnificent 6 over the long on boundary).

With a balmy dusk falling over the familiar riverside scene, both teams repaired to the bar to reflect on a season which July had threatened to wash out entirely, but August had redeemed. Cricket was declared the winner, and the summer was put to bed.

Dodgers v Cancer Research 16.08.12

Battersea Park
18 overs
6pm
Sunny

Another Dodgers win!

The Battersea Park pitch was small, and almost anything off the bat was likely to go to the boundary. Despite this, a super tight Dodgers bowling attack restricted the promising batsmen of new oppo Cancer Research to 107 off their 18 overs. This was never likely to be enough. TQ and Mike started our chase off on the right foot with some smart running and nice hitting; guest Superstar Vijay launched three very creditable sixes into the bushes on his way to retirement; and Dan followed up with two smart boundaries of his own to take us over the winning line with many overs still to spare.

Dodgers win!

Glorious August sunshine shone down upon us as we kicked off the last couple of weeks of the season. The Science Museum were fielding a stronger team than when we met earlier in the year, and managed to notch up 96 runs on a pitch with long boundaries on all sides. Led by a rejuvenated Neil Priest, returning from reconstructive back surgery but nursing a heavy cold, we raced past the target with overs to spare.

Most annoyingly, another defeat at the hands of the old foe. We didn't score enough runs, and despite a valiant rearguard action lost in the gloaming. The Ken Block trophy stays with the Rats, but next season it will be ours...

Dodgers 142 all out lost to Superstars 147 all out by five runs

MoM votes: Hilary 6, Dollin 2, Sardar 1

Match report: JH

For the second time in the season, Dodgers managed to throw away a good chance of victory over the old foe. We bowled well, Prem in particular pinning down the strong Superstars openers and Tom claiming the first key wicket just when we needed it. JH managed to snaffle three more wickets to bring his week's tally to seven, while NJ, Muhammad and Sardar all bowled with controlled economy. Superstars would have scored more had they managed to bat out their overs, but their usually impressive running between the wicket turned so shambolic that even Dodgers managed to notch up three run-outs. With just over 4 an over to score, we knew we were in with a strong shout.

Dodgers started the run chase promisingly in what were by this time very boggy conditions, with additional bursts of rain sheeting down for good measure. Mike and Phil built us a solid platform that was only just behind the run rate, Mike riding his luck big time with umpteen catching chances going down. We were still in the driving seat on their departure with lots of strong batting still to come, but the introduction of the Rats slow bowlers did for us, Jason Marchant in particular taking 4 wickets and proving impossible to hit off the square. We would still have won it had we just managed to bat out our own overs, but one by one the Dodgers batsmen failed to stick. Three ginger beers in the Coach & Horses were needed to take away the bitter taste of self-inflicted defeat.

Match report: JH

Dodgers win - overwhelmingly!

Having sought out a new pitch (our normal Barnes Common one being both waterlogged and booked by another team) Dodgers won the toss and chose to bat. Muhammad was unlucky to fall LBW to a straight one, but subsequent batsmen set about the bowling with aplomb. Sacha, Phil, NJ and Tom all notched up their 25s in double quick time, while JC, Sergei and Steve kept the other end ticking over nicely. A total of 160 in just 18 overs was always going to be more than competitive, given the strength of our bowling attack and the state of the outfield.

And so it proved. The Dodgers openers went into overdrive, and the Science Museum were skittled out for just 36. With five wickets coming in six balls (including a second Dodgers hat-trick in consecutive games, this time for John Hilary) only one of the Scientists managed to put up much resistance. We were soon supping with the beautiful people at The Spencer on Putney Common, as the dusk and drizzle came softly down.

Dodgers v Nomura 27.06.12

Belair Park
T20
6pm
Humid

Dodgers 145 for 5 (Taylor 30*, Marsh 30*, Shimoga (NJ) 24*) beat Nomura 144 for 7 (Gray 3 for 24) by 4 wickets

MOM votes: Gray 9 and Marsh 1

Nomura batted strongly, making good use of the short boundaries on the farther Belair pitch and running well between the wickets to post a commendable total. Top moment came with John Gray's first ever Dodgers wicket - which he swiftly turned into a magnificent hat-trick! Not content with this feat, John then notched up a direct hit run out, comfortably securing him the Man of the Match accolade before we had even started batting.

A target of 145 could easily have proved troublesome, and Nomura's bowling was of a high standard. However, Dollin and Lindsey set us off at a cracking rate, ably supported by Falla and McBarron. Captain Matt Taylor used up eight of his nine lives in reaching his retirement score, while Marsh swept to 30* with a succession of majestic boundaries. NJ struck a couple of spectacular sixes to take us over the finishing line with two overs to spare, ending the month-long Dodgers drought with a well deserved victory.

NB for all those playing the next game here, bring mosquito repellent.

Fine

Dodgers 106 for 3 (Priest 25*, McBarron 20*) lost to LSC 107 for 2 by 7 wickets

MoM votes: Priest 5 and Westhead 4

This game saw five of our very best bowlers playing for the oppo, and we were further weakened by turning out a nine-man team whose average age hovered around the 50 mark. The Dodgers pace attack (playing for the oppo) kept our openers pinned down, with Prem turning in amazing figures of 4-2-6-0. Neil, Sergei and Phil helped us scrape into three figures, but with our top bowlers playing for the oppo, we were never going to defend such a low score. It was all over before you could say "isn't that the Dodgers bowling attack playing for the oppo"...

Dodgers v ATOC 19.06.12

Regents Park
6pm
T20

Dodgers 115 for 6 (Dollin 17 & Shimoga (NJ) 15 ) lost to ATOC 116 for 7 (Hassan 2 for 15, Bennett 2 for 36 and Shimoga (NJ) 1 for 14) by 2 wickets with 5.2 overs remaining.

MOM: Shimoga (NJ) 6, Hassan 3 and Dollin 1

At 6 o'clock there were only 4 Dodgers on the ground and with the full opposition team. Slowly one by one...3! Dodgers came and that it. Had to borrow one player from the Oppo and two tourists from India happened to be at regents park with the family stepped in for rescue only after getting permission from home office :).

With agreement Dodgers batted first and manage to put a decent score of 115 on board. Dodgers all set to defend 115 with Hassan opening the bowling he hit the stumps on the first ball sending Lord home for golden duck. Dodgers manage to get wickets every other over but not able to restrict the oppo who cruised towards the target with 5 overs remaining.

Apparently another loss for Dodgers.

Dodgers v DfE 14.06.12

Chiswick
6pm
T20 - Changed to 15 overs with 8 ball an over
Overcast, drizzle

Dodgers (51 all out) lost to DfE (52 no loss) by a full innings

MOM votes: Priest 4, Wahi 3 and Hilary 2

Match report: Mike Dollin

"Our season continues to implode" quoted from a senior Dodgers player (though am not sure anyone thanks them for being called senior).

A spate of comms traffic on the emails revealed a clear desire from Dodgers to back the weather forecasts and call off the game, saving our time if not our cash. However, this general desire was frustrated by the keenness of the oppo and NJ's more generally irrepressible desire to have a game. The oppo had 9 but were keen to play their first game of the season. TQ promised to fight off jet lag, NJ said he'd make it back from the 40 over game he had at Imber Court v Superstars, and he promised to bring Prem with him. The oppo got 9 and we got Sourabh, but that was the extent of our reinforcements.

Watching the small but well drilled DfE team do continuous knock downs from 5.30 till match start, Dodgers eventually mustered enough to bat first on a too-short-of-numbers-to-do-a-toss basis. The rain had started with us but this did not impact the DfE's opening bowler, who made me regret agreeing to 8 ball overs as he sent me packing with a peach that seamed off middle and clipped the top of off, 8th ball in. Spared me playing and missing another over. Pete Lee senior more judiciously left outside off to said bowler, and Neil got past some miscued shots that landed safe to get his head down and the innings seemed on safe if opening morning of the test levels of run scoring. But Pete tried to force the pace and could only miscue a drive to mid off. McB joined Priest and fell soon after having seen off the new ball pair - but then miscuing a depressingly simple catch this time to point off DfE's aged leggie. Neil played the shot of the innings, a straight drive past mid on, but fell to another tweak merchant - miscuing a pull from a rank leg side long hop to top edge in refreshingly hilarious fashion by 6 feet in the air and plop into the keeper's gloves. If anyone recalls the Peanuts cartoon where Charlie Brown tells Lucy to go out into the outfield to catch a monstrous fly ball he's going to give her for practice and she doesn't move despite all his promises, and he hits it and it plinks into her hand six feet away, you'll appreciate the shot. But as you probably don't then let's just say Sourabh had trouble to not laugh too much as Priesty departed (and he gave him his MoM vote so NP must be ok).

The other item of email banter during the day was about Dodgers lowest score, and at 28-4 with only 8 in attendance this chat looked scarily prescient. Sourabh played some classy shots but was thwarted by a heavy outfield and gave the ancient leggie another wicket as an attempted off smash was tickled to the keeper for a good low catch. JH was showing the steely determination that must serve the war on want so well with his continued march via the Rob Fox route to possible batsman of the season. He was supported by Captain Carr in an unusual "not last to the pitch" role, and whose stalwart defence yielded to ill judged adventure - bowled leg stump off an on drive against the more inexplicably successful slow bowler.

Which unleashed the Cat - in a rich seam of form - his swashbuckling innings against Kai Dragons a rare bright spot in that schemozzle. Well, he would have been unleashed if he hadn't been in the lav when Cap'n Carr departed. Analysis of mode of dismissal had also been on the email that afternoon, but Cat avoided being timed out by dint of neither Pete nor myself having a watch on us and the oppo not minding hugely as we had only tottered to 40 odd for 6 at this point.

But triumphantly returning to the crease he'd set alight scarce a week ago, he no more enjoyed this far stodgier version than anyone else, and after some edges for runs an expansive drive left the stumps' equilibrium disrupted.

Guy, last but never least, arrived in the unusual position of last man in, but with the usual intent and played the latest slow bowler (skipper Malleson) in the usual Westhead idiom - advances down the pitch most usually followed by immediate retreats into his ground to play a back footed sort of shot from more or less where he started. He fell lbw perplexed that where he'd finished (in this magnificent dance across the crease) wasn't where he was struck - bang in front of middle. This left steel haired JH stranded on an innings-best-equalling score of 11 - well played but still left hungry. Dodgers all out for 55 and avoiding our lowest score. Just.

One is never sure how a team will cope chasing a small total on a sticky pitch with a heavy outfield in the dark. In DfE's case, the answer was "easily". JH bowled well but without reward and getting enough tap to not impede the run rate, nor so much that it undid his work with the bat in the minds of the voters. Sourabh bowled the usual mix of too good leg breaks and four balls that accompany every leggie from Warne on down. His best over saw one of the DfE openers beaten 5 times in a row and ended with an overpitched 8th hoicked through mid wicket. Such is life.

Our best weapons fired and DfE careering to victory, Pete Lee tried to find the answer (and the pitch), and was spared too many wides as one suspected DfE preferred the extra runs to the averages. The fist pump at the end of the over was more related to relief than anything more usually associated with fist pumps.

With the Ireland game looming (they had their own date with humiliation) Sergei was given an over. But it only lasted a ball as an unprotected cow corner was pummelled for the winning runs - home by 8 wickets and only prevented from the better sounding ten wicket win by having 9 players.

Despite the drubbing, DfE were a more than amiable lot and we look forward to a bit of revenge in the return at Belair later in the season. Mind you, respectability would do.
