Dodgers lose on last ball

A great September afternoon's cricket, with two games for the price of one against the friendly Blue Marlins. The first, originally billed as 40 overs, failed to go the distance, as the Marlins were skittled out for just 60. Top honours go to Dan Saunders, who secured his place in the Dodgers hall of fame with an excellent five-wicket hall, and good fielding backed up the bowlers throughout (including two neat catches by Mike 'Bucket Hands' Dollin at slip). Openers Dollin and Westhead looked set to polish off the runs between them, but we managed to lose a flurry of wickets when just two short of the victory post. However, the contest was over so quickly that we agreed to turn round for a T20 rematch.

Dodgers went in first this time, with the batting order remodelled to give everyone a go. Sacha set about the Marlins' bowling with a will, notching up a swift 42 before yorking himself. Grant, on his debut for us, had been yorked for a golden duck in the first game, but showed his class this time around with an excellent collection of shots (before retiring due to 'exhaustion'). With contributions from NJ, Phil, Vijay, JH and Dan we made it up to the 145 mark before repairing to the pavilion for tea. Given the Marlins' form in the 40-over match, the odds were on our side.

As soon as JH and Dan opened our bowling, however, it was clear that this was going to be a very different game. Both went for a shedload of runs, with the Marlins peppering the boundary from the start. Only once the openers had been dismissed did we manage to peg them back, with NJ, Vijay and Phil doing sterling work to force the required run rate up into double figures. With 30 needed to win off the last three overs, we were surely in the driving seat - but it was not to be. A flurry of boundaries in the last over saw them reach our total with one ball to spare. The field closed in to prevent the all-important single that would take them over the winning line, but the Marlins bat had other ideas, lofting it far over the midwicket boundary for a final six. Disappointing though it was for us to lose from such a strong position, the Marlins had sportingly lent us two fielders throughout the match, without whom we'd have gone down much earlier. All in all, justice was done.

40 Overs game

Dodgers 61 for 2 (Dollin 43) beat Blue Marlins 60 for 10 (Saunders 5/15, Anand 3/14 & Hilary 2/7) by 8 wickets with 3 overs remaining.

MoM votes: Saunders 7, Dollin 1 & Anand 1

Despite our having come to the last week of August, it turned out that this was the DfE's first game of the season - and it was clear that they had not yet formed into the finely tuned fighting unit that is Dodgers CC. Our batsmen were too strong for the short South Park boundaries, and our bowling too tight for the DfE response. Even with Ralph and Mohammed on short-term loan to the oppo, we won at a canter.

Dodgers 223 for 4 (McBarron 51*, Radcliffe 50* & Anand 37*) beat LSE 222 for 10 (Shimoga (NJ) 3/29, Hilary 2/28 & Gray 2/37) by 6 wickets with 3 overs remaining.

MoM votes: Anand 7 and Radcliffe 4

Dodgers recorded a famous victory over an LSE team that looked threatening with both bat and ball but eventually succumbed to our superior firepower. The oppo had gone after our bowling with a will, their middle order in particular showing how a dry outfield and short boundaries can turn into quick scoring and large totals. Vijay was as economical and accurate as ever, but the rest of us went to all corners of the field as LSE broke through the 200 mark. Wickets continued to fall, however, and a grand total of 222 was never out of sight on such a good pitch.

After a spectacular biryani tea - many thanks, Khalid - Dodgers sent out Radcliffe and McBarron to the middle with instructions to stick around and build the innings steadily. This they most certainly did, putting together an excellent opening partnership of 86 and both eventually retiring with unbeaten half centuries under their respective belts. For Damian, back with us from Qatar for just two matches, this was not only his maiden 50 for Dodgers, but all the sweeter for being accomplished with a nasty hand injury sustained in the field. JH, Sacha, JC, NJ and Jatinder all kept the run rate ticking along nicely, but the game was still in the balance until Vijay opened his shoulders and carried us over the line with a flurry of fours and a couple of huge sixes hit out of the ground. We rounded off a very pleasant evening at The Hope on Wandsworth Common, where Damian put his hard-earned Qatari riyals to honourable use.

Dodgers v LAA, 15.08.13

Belair Park
T20
6pm
Fine

Dodgers 125 All out (McBarron 27* & Bennett*) lost to LAA (Legal Aid Agency - formerly LSC) 130 for 1 (Zaheer 1/32) by lot of wickets with 5 overs remaining.

Batting let the Dodgers down again as we struggled to get enough runs on the diminutive Belair pitch, this time against an LAA team that was made up almost entirely of regular Dodgers players. A top order collapse was briefly redeemed by some nice hitting by Cooper, McBarron, Bennett and Zaheer, but a total of 125 was never going to hold back the exuberance of the two Dans, NJ, Tim and Saurabh. However, given that they are all members of our own team really, Duckworth Lewis has allowed us to notch this up as a moral victory. Go Dodgers!

MoM votes: Bennett 5, Zaheer 3 & McBarron 2

Southwark Community Sports Trust (SCST) Cricket Challenge, 11.08.13

Turney Road, Dulwich
4 teams & 3 matches each
15 Overs
Overcast
25 retirement and normal rules for Wides/No balls

On a cloudy Sunday afternoon in Dulwich, the Dodgers adapted swiftly to the 15 over format of the game. An excellent SCST Cricket Challenge tournament win ensued but, alas, no trophy for the victors. The consolation for an absence of silverware came in the form of a fine tea and post-tournament barbeque.

3 convincing wins for the Dodgers on the day who displayed good depth in the main disciplines. All proceeds raised from the tournament went to the Southwark Community Sports Trust

Match1: Dodgers v Dulwich CC

Dodgers 138 for 4 (Sood 26*, Malins 26* & Dollin* 25) beat Dulwich CC 88 for 5 (Sood 1/7 & Shimoga (NJ)* 1/9) by 50 runs.

First up were Dulwich CC, a team containing a number of savvy seniors. Batting first, the Dodgers set an imposing target of 138. Openers Dolin (25no) and Malins (26no) set the tone for the rest of the day’s batting. In the middle order, Taylor (21no) scored quickly, kindly targeting the bowling of a friend of his in the DCC line-up from karate. The Dodgers score was further supplemented by some fine late hitting from Sood (26no).

In response, Dulwich CC never threatened to reach the required run rate to challenge the Dodgers total and were 88 for 5 at the completion of their 15 overs. Following his display with the bat, Sood was the pick of the bowlers with a miserly, precise spell producing 1 for 7 from 3 overs.

Match2: Dodgers v KCHRFC

Dodgers 91 for no loss (Wahi 28* & Saunders 19*) beat KCHRFC 90 for 7 (Taylor 2/13 & Mayana 2/18) by 10 wickets with 3.3 overs remaining.

Next up for the Dodgers came the plucky rugby club, who borrowed Cohen from the Dodgers following the arrival of Blair. The rugby club threatened some big hitting, having had a few retirees in their previous match against the SCST Select XI. Fortunately for the Dodgers this big hitting never materialised and, although a few made a useful start, wickets at regular intervals from the bowling of Gray, Mayana, Wahi, and Taylor ensured that none aside from Cohen managed to hit a big score. Blair also bowled with reasonable economy to limit the rugby club to 90 from their 15 overs.

Although the order was shuffled slightly, the Dodgers made light work of chasing their target. Saunders, Naidu, Mallins, Taylor, and (most notably) Wahi made sure the Dodgers hit 91 from 11.3 overs.

Match3: Dodgers v SCST Select XI

Dodgers 142 for 4 (Taylor 26*, Sood 24, Mayana 22 & Malins 21) beat SCST Select XI 84 for 5 (Naidu 3/21, Wahi & Saunders 1 each) by 58 runs.

The tournament was poised nicely. Both the Dodgers and SCST Select XI had won both of their matches in convincing fashion and a close match was expected. Winning the toss, the Dodgers elected to bat. Dollin unfortunately fell quickly for 4 but Mallins (21) and Taylor (26no) hit quick scores off the SCST bowling. Mayana (22) and Sood (24) also hit impressive scores at a good rate and a A.N.Extra retired not out for 25. Occasional Dodger Mendelsohn was unable to prevent the Dodgers from reaching 142 for 4.

In reply, SCST opener, Blackford, signalled his intent by lofting Naidu for 6 off the first ball of the innings. A close chase was anticipated but Naidu recovered in fine fashion to send Blackford’s stumps flying. He then removed two further threats; first bowling Thornton and then finding Mendelsohn’s edge. SCST fell further and further behind the required run rate, ending on 84 for 5 thanks to some good bowling contributions throughout the Dodgers team.

Dodgers v Buckhurst Hill, 04.08.13

Buckhurst Hill higher ground
Sacha Hatteea
Timed game
2pm
Sunny

Dodgers 216 for 7 (Hatteea 125) beat Buckhurst Hill 212 for 9 (Hilary 2/49 & Naidu 2/50) by 2 wickets with 3.5 overs remaining.

MoM votes: Hatteea 9 and Naidu 1

Yet another victory in the amazing Dodgers season comeback, this time over a Buckhurst Hill side brimming with young talent. Led by Prem, our bowlers stuck to their task well, on a dry ground with short boundaries and a slope that meant almost anything hit off the square looked to cross the ropes. Excellent fielding from Mike Dollin (two sharp catches) and Peter Lee the Elder (two smart run-outs) supported the bowling, with Sacha doing good work behind the stumps. The Buckhurst total of 212 looked eminently gettable as we went in for a very pleasant tea.

The story of the day, however, was still to come in a magnificent century from Hatteea (his first for Dodgers), beating the short-lived individual score record set by Dollin just a month earlier. Sacha made full use of the short boundaries, cracking anything too short or too long into the gaps and lofting a couple of juicy sixes into the trees of Epping Forest, while never looking like getting out (until he lobbed an innocuous one to the only fielder still in close on the off side). We were comfortably placed by now, but managed to turn the game into a much closer contest than needed by virtue of the customary Dodgers wobble, as Priest, Lee, McB, JC and Sergei all trooped back to the pavilion in unnecessarily quick succession. Some lusty hitting from NJ finally turned the tide in our favour, although he was lucky to be dropped on the mid-wicket boundary. The end came in the most poetic manner, as NJ connected with a short one and smashed it far out of the ground for six. A great game in a lovely setting, with drinks courtesy of Centurion Sacha to round off the day.

Dodgers v Superstars, 06.08.13

Chiswick
T20
6pm
Fine

No Retirement and normal rules for Wide and No ball's.

Dodgers 85 all out (Extras 19, Lindsey 12, Priest 12 & Bennett 11*) lost to Superstars 137 for 7 (Shimoga (NJ) 2/17 & Bennett 2/29) by 52 runs

MoM: Bennett 7, Shimoga (NJ) 2, Dollin† 1 and Lindsey 1

Dodgers winning streak finally ended with a disastrous loss.

McB: Dew got into the wicket which made it skiddier and lower but we chose to bat 2nd and were in any case thoroughly outplayed (dropping Walker 5 times hardly helped). We knew 138 would be tough with long boundaries and long grass which is why we put our hitters up the order but that didn’t work.

Dodgers v Moreys Marauders, 23.07.13

Southpark
T20
6pm
Muggy

25 retirement and 2 runs for Wides/No ball & no extra ball

Dodgers 128 for 4 (Hatteea† 26* of 11, Lakesn 25* of 11 & Cooper (R) 26* of 25) beat Morey's Marauders 126 for 7 (McBarron 3/23, Hilary 2/22 & Laken 1/18) by 4 wickets & 6 balls remaining

MoM: Laken 5, Taylor 1, Hilary 1, McBarron 1 & Hatteea† 1

Tight bowling from the entire Dodgers attack kept the Marauders down to a total that was too low for such a diminutive pitch, but special mention must be made here of the extraordinary display of Dodgers catching prowess, which is what really did for our opposition. Following an easy lob pouched by McBarron at mid on, Captain Carr hung on to a whistling stinger at extra cover before Taylor flew across the long on boundary to snaffle one that would otherwise have flown past him for 6. Cooper plucked one from far above his head before Taylor caught another in the deep. So great was the momentum that Hilary even managed to catch Dollin at square leg, but sadly this was while subbing for the oppo.

Hatteea laid into the Marauders' bowling with gusto, making nothing of the predictably unpredictable South Park wicket. Laken notched up his 25 with some equally hefty blows, and when Cooper and Hilary each moved into their 20s the game was up for the Marauders. Carr and McBarron steered us to a comfortable victory with an over to spare.

Fluent batting from McBarron with four classy boundaries. Superb sixes from Lindsey, Falla and Malins, with Taylor adding some nice runs of his own. Good to see Falla get his first 25 for Dodgers. Tight bowling from Mayana and Shimoga ensured us a comfortable victory. Another game and another WIN!

Dodgers v Green Sox, 15.07.13

Regents Park
T20
6pm
Overcast, hot

25 retirement, 2 runs for Wides/No balls and no extra ball.

Dodgers 170 for 6 (Dollin 26* off 16, Priest 28* off 23 and Shimoga (NJ) 25* off 9) beat Green Sox 37 all out (Cousins 6 for 5 with a hat-trick and McBarron 2 for 7) by 133 runs.

MoM votes: Cousins 11 and Shimoga (NJ) 1

The Master Returns. As if he had never been away, Dodgers legend Simon Cousins - on home leave from down under - slotted straight back into the bowling attack and took no fewer than six Green Sox wickets, including a hat-trick, en route to the second best figures in the club's history. A strong batting line-up had already secured us a massive total of 170, including two magnificent sixes from NJ, but the Regents Park boundaries were short and the outfield bone dry so we were taking nothing for granted. Yet it took only a few overs of carnage and we were back drinking Simon's health at the Spread Eagle, pledging to follow in his illustrious footsteps until he should return again. A memorable evening, and a pleasure to be part of it.

Dodgers v Superstars, 10.07.13

Imber Court
40 overs
2pm
Fine

Dodgers 193 for 4 (McBarron 66 of 68, Taylor 51 of 89 and Lindsey 27 of 29) beat Superstars 191 for 6 (McBarron 2 for 15 and Kashyap 2 for 25) by 6 wickets with 4 overs remaining.

MoM votes: McBarron 10 and Taylor 1

Match report: JH

Another famous win for Dodgers over the old foe, on a glorious summer's afternoon in Surrey. The game started with a burst of high excitement, as Nitesh clipped the off stump of dangerous Superstars opener Gaught with his second ball. Walker, also opening for the Rats, steadied the ship and went on to make a well crafted century, with backing from Meyler, Spencer and Gigg. Yet the run rate was kept low as all Dodgers bowlers stuck to their task, ably supported by some good fielding on a ground with short boundaries and even shorter grass. A total of 191 looked ominously low for a 40-over match against a Dodgers team bristling with hard hitters.

Our innings started smartly, although Dollin was unable to repeat his Herculean feats of the previous weekend and succumbed for just 5. Step forward McBarron and Taylor, who proceeded to put on 106 between them for the second wicket, both reaching well deserved half centuries. Before he could translate his into something even greater, Phil was bowled by a fizzer from VJ, who then took out Chris Ford's off stump with his next ball. Palmer hit a quick 9 before making way for stand-in keeper Lindsey, who gave an exquisite display of off drives to race to his 27 not out. We were always well up with the run rate, and coasted home with overs to spare.

Dodgers v Green Sox, 07.07.13

Scorching sunshine

No retirement, normal rules for Wides/No balls.

Dodgers 282 for 6 (Dollin 119* of 118, Shimoga 56 of 31, Mayana 32* of 24) beat Green Sox 170 for 5 (Shimoga (NJ) 4 for 29) by 112 runs

MoM: Dollin 9 and Shimoga (NJ) 1

Match report: JH

A thumping victory for Dodgers on a fabulously hot summer's day in SE21, thoroughly eclipsing anything achieved by Andy Murray over in SW18. Pride of place goes to Mr Michael Dollin (pictured), who carried his bat through three sweltering hours to register his maiden Dodgers century and the highest ever individual Dodgers score. Mike was ably supported by some brutal hitting from Shimoga (NJ) and Sardar, and we closed just 18 runs short of the 300 mark.

The amiable Green Sox, who had fielded throughout the hottest part of the day, looked suitably overawed by this mammoth total. Yet both openers registered good 50s, Purcey falling just four runs short of his own century when he was trapped lbw on the back foot. In the end, though, Dodgers repaired to the Crown and Greyhound as convincing winners, and Mike's achievement was toasted to universal acclaim.

Dodgers v Carib Beer XI, 02.07.13

Belair park
T20
6pm
Cloudy

25 retirement, normal rules for Wides/No balls.

Dodgers 131 for 4 (Cooper (R) 27* of 17 and Priest 25* of 28) beat Carib Beer XI 98 for 8 (Mayana 2/13, Shimoga (NJ) 2/25 & Palmer 2/26) by 33 runs.

MoM votes: Mayana 4, Cooper (R) 4, Priest 2 & Lindsey 1

Dodgers desperately needing a win to break the lossing streak. JC won the Toss and choose to bat, as half of the Dodgers running late Priest and Westhead opened the batting. The wicket was no different from the Southpark cricket square, with irregular bounces and dips. Dodgers started safely and steadly, Priest made his 25* retired, Westhead and Lindsey struggled and Lindsey got bowled to a ball that just rolled after pitching! Rob Cooper took the charge and scored swiftly 27* of only 17 balls. McBarron played well with almost run a ball and Mayana quick 19* of 11 balls helped Dodgers in making a decent score.

Dodgers opened the bowling with Nitesh and Bennett, both bowled a tight spell with only conceeding 31 of 8 overs between them. Palmer, Mayana and Shimoga (NJ) all three bowled well and picked up 2 wickets each. In the end Carib XI needed 38 runs of last over, only manage to get 5.
