Dodgers v English Heritage, 19.06.13

South Park
T20
6pm
Overcast

Dodgers 106 for 8 (Hilary 25* & Taylor 16) lost to English Heritage 110 for 4 (Hilary 3/21 & Gray 1/10) by 6 wicket & 4.2 overs remaining.

MoM votes: Gray 1, Hilary 10

Match report: JH

Fresh from the weekend's drubbing at Roehampton, Dodgers registered another defeat in what could have been a close match, but in the end wasn't. The South Park wicket was its usual unpredictable self, with good length balls rising vertically to fizz pass the batsman's head and short ones skidding along the floor. Heritage took better advantage of the conditions, bowling and fielding tightly for most of the innings, and Dodgers lost more wickets than was good for us early on. Hilary steadied the ship briefly with first Lee and then Zaheer, followed by a final flourish from Palmer, but we had already been undone. The outfield was fast and the boundaries short, and the Heritage took to our bowling with gusto. We were put out of our misery with five overs to spare.

Mention must be made of Captain Taylor's unprecedented behaviour in wearing only his undershorts to play the game, his whites still wet from being washed after the weekend. Despite having stopped off at the Earls Court Oxfam en route to the game to buy a pair of golf shorts (which were then found to be unwearably small), Matt opted to play sporting only his skin-tight trunks. While this was passable when batting, in that various forms of thigh padding offered at least a semblance of modesty, the sight of their captain fielding semi-naked clearly sapped the team's confidence. We leave it to the Committee to decide what level of fine is appropriate.

Dodgers v Roehampton CC, 16.06.13

Roehampton
Timed game
2pm
Overcast at first, then glorious sunshine
Match report: JH

Roehampton 136 all out (Hilary 3/32 & Gray 2/26) beat Dodgers 115 all out (McBarron 38* off 92, Wahi 17 off 15) by 21 runs

MoM votes: Hilary 6, Gray 2, Shimoga (NJ) 1 and McBarron 1

Another afternoon game in which Dodgers were set fair for victory, but where our application in batting let us down. The scene could not have been more perfect: playing the venerable Roehampton Cricket Club (founded 1842, no less) on leafy Putney Heath in the June sunshine, with swifts and parakeets swooping overhead. Some Dodgers had even managed to savour the delights of the nearby Telegraph public house before starting the game.

Dodgers lost the toss and Roehampton elected to bat. The outfield was still slightly damp from some earlier drizzle, and there was a little cloud cover to help the bowlers, plus a pitch with some unexpected bounce. Roehampton were pegged back by line and length from openers Gray and Sood, and only Hatteea (playing against Dodgers, for once) looked secure at the crease as wickets began to fall around him. This sense of security was boosted by TQ's kindly refusal to catch Sacha on two occasions, but when Dollin stumped him off a cunning wider one from Hilary, the Roehampton innings sped towards a premature end. Special mention must be made of Sood's young daughter Nicole, who fielded excellently on the long off boundary and saved us at least 15 runs over the course of the game. A total of 136 looked far short of what was necessary, and we repaired to the Roehampton club house for tea in good heart.

The Dodgers innings started well enough, with Dollin and McBarron scoring steadily. Yet just as Mike looked to be opening up for a long knock, he was out to a good 'un. Before you could say "moral fibre", each one of our top order batsmen came and went in quick succession, with only Phil showing the sort of staying power needed in an afternoon game. Saurabh, Shimoga (NJ) and JH connected with one or two in reaching double figures, but it was not enough. We were all out 20 runs short, with two and a half overs to spare.

Dodgers v Kai Dragons, 11.06.13

Chiswick
T20
6pm

Weather: Cloudy at first, sunny later
Match report: JH

Dodgers 107 for 6 (Shimoga (NJ) 30*, Qureshi 12, Hilary/Saunders/Cooper (R) 11) beat Kai Dragons 100 all out (Shimoga (NJ) 2-0-5-3, Khalid 1-0-4-1, Palmer 4-0-21-1 & Hilary 4-0-9-0) by 3 wickets

MoM: Hilary - 5, Shimoga (NJ) - 5 & Palmer - 1

Heavy skies over Chiswick in the end never troubled a thrilling game, as Dodgers took on an opposition that we have not beaten in several years. The Dragons' opening bowlers were suitably fiery, and a bouncy pitch meant that Dan and Khalid were unable to score as freely as they would have liked, Dan being run out while trying for an ambitious second as the pressure mounted. Tawhid joined Khalid in a bout of free hitting, including an IPL-inspired boundary lifted straight over the keeper's head (or top-edged, depending on your point of view). Both were eventually caught, and it fell to NJ to carry us forward with an exceptional 30 off just 18 balls, including a punched drive over extra cover for four, an immense half-volley for six over mid wicket, and a final six (when on 24) over the square leg boundary. Carr, Cooper, Saunders and Hilary all helped the score towards three figures, with Palmer perishing selflessly in the cause. A total of 107 looked a touch light, but hopes were high that we had the bowling attack to defend it.

As it happened, the Dragons got off to a brisk start, and by the half way stage in their innings were ahead of the run rate with almost all their wickets still in hand. Our three pace openers (John, Tom and Rob) bowled well, but were allowed no room for error as McKee in particular raced to 25 and retirement. The two decisive factors in our favour proved to be (a) the Dragons' overenthusiasm in taking runs that weren't there, resulting in no fewer than five run-outs, and (b) a spell of extremely tight bowling by the Dodgers change attack, which began to ratchet up the pressure on the batsmen. NJ's three wickets from two overs meant that McKee came back for one final hurrah, but excellent control by Khalid at the death left the Dragons needing a six from the final ball. McKee struck it sweetly and it sailed skywards towards the boundary - but was nicely caught by Palmer at deep extra cover. Dodgers had secured a famous victory off the last ball.

MoM: Shimoga (NJ) - 6, Gray - 4 & Hatteea - 1

Second game that went to the last over this season after the Southbank game. This time Dodgers bowling in the second half to defend a low score of 98 runs. AdHoc outlaws needed 1 run to tie, 2 runs to win of last 6 balls and Shimoga (NJ) bowling the last over. Everything happened in that one over..dot followed dot followed dot, 5 dot balls, 2 run outs and 2 runs to win from last ball. NJ bowls outside half stump and the Oppo batsman Lord go for the big swing and misses it, Dodgers celebrate. But wait...umpire Zach hesitantly gives a wide!! Now the scores are tied and 1 run to win from the last ball, NJ bowls the ripper it beats the batsman between bat & pad, misses the stump, beat the keeper Hatteea and as well the fielder Dollin to 4 byes, that comes to an end of the closest loss of the season.
