Dodgers v Bengal Troopers, 07.09.14

Dan Malins
Hainault Recreation Ground
35 overs (no retirement)
2pm
Sunny and warm

Toss: won by Dodgers, who elected to bat

Dodgers 311 for 5 (Malins 189* of 107 & Ridwan 40* of 27) Lost to Bengal Troopers 312 for 6 (Hasan 2/43 & Ridwan 2/67) in last over

MOM: Malins 8 & Hasan 1

A simply extraordinary game played in late summer sunshine against a very sporting bunch of lads who generously lent us three of their players (and who also deserve our thanks for the excellent picnic tea).

Dan (Malins) opened the batting for Dodgers together with guest opener Hassan, and both soon began to enjoy the true bounce of the artificial pitch, speeding along at 7 an over from the start. Eventually Hassan was caught swinging at a wide one and Guy soon succumbed to a horribly inevitable stumping, while NJ and the other Dan (Saunders) also fell to good catches. Following the dismissal of Captain Carr, our second guest Redwan went out to the middle and began to score with abandon. Yet the story of the afternoon was the incredible knock of Dan M, who proceeded to smash the previous Dodgers record for an individual score by notching up a staggering 189 not out. By the end of the innings Dan was hitting sixes off almost every ball, and at one point could almost have bagged a double ton. His heroics took our total to a record-beating 311 off just 35 overs, and a certain victory.

All certainty is illusion. Incredible though our total was, the ability of Dodgers to lose from totally impregnable positions is more incredible yet. We were tonked to all corners of the field by almost every one of the Bengal Troopers, and badly let down by some decidedly sub-standard fielding as the day wore on. In truth, no one could quite bring themselves to believe that two teams might get more than 300 in the same afternoon, but this was indeed to be our fate. With just 5 needed off the final over, the Troopers won with four balls to spare. The only consolation was that they had played the game in the nicest spirit, and it will be a pleasure to give them a rematch next year.

Dodgers v Superstars, 05.08.14

Chiswick
20 overs (25 retirement, 2 runs for wide/no ball and no extra ball except last over)
6pm
Cloudy & dark in the end

Toss: Won by Superstars and elected to bowl first

Dodgers 153 for 3 (Hatteea 29* of 21, Shahin 26* of 16 & Shimoga (NJ) 26* of 17) Beat Superstars 124 for 8 (Hanspal 2/17, Palmer 2/25 & Shahin 1/5) by 29 runs

MOM: Shahin 4, Hatteea 3, Shimoga (NJ) 2 & Lindsey 2

Match report by Lee Sr.

The Dodgers rolled up to a somewhat arid-looking Dukes Meadow struggling to deal with a slightly odd situation – playing a dead rubber game against the auld enemy Superstars. Unlike the feeble England “professionals” at the recent FIFA shindig in Brazil, Dodgers proved more than able to stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood and cry God for Hattea, Lindsey and St Carr. A solid, whisper it routine, win meant the Ken Block trophy was claimed 3-0, although like the Australians at recent Ashes series the Dodgers were unable to actually celebrate with the original trophy – rumour has it that curator Barry won’t allow it be removed from its climate-controlled glass case in the bowels of Great Minster House. At least until Superstars win it back.

The opposition, seeking a change of fortune, opted to offer Dodgers first use on a good track with a sporty outfield, full of the kind of unusual and characterful bounce so absent from the soulless, flat swards of Lords, Old Trafford and Trent Bridge. Mohan immediately got stuck in, displaying his usual aggression. Dollin was a little more circumspect before he succumbed to Singh. After Mohan followed him, caught off a steepler, the strong middle-order powered Dodgers on with Hatteea and Shahin both retiring after a blaze of shots. Hatteea in particular demonstrated footwork so nifty that a place steering an aging former soap star around the Strictly Coming Dancing ballroom must be virtually in the bag. Shimoga (NJ) and Lindsey then put together a good partnership, albeit one disappointingly short of acrimonious running between the wickets. Two run outs finished things off; Hanspal caught short going for a cheeky second and Lindsey run out after trying to decline a run off the last ball.

Being so close to red ink would have left certain members of the Dodgers squad sobbing uncontrollably in the corner but not Lindsey, who recovered quickly to nip a threatening opening in the bud with a tidy stumping off Palmer, shortly after Hanspal had castled Spencer with a good ‘un. Two more wickets fell quickly as Hanspal repeated the same trick and Palmer and Lindsey recombined, the latter taking a smart catch. Superstars looked ENGLAND CRICKET TEAM CLICHÉ ALERT well behind the 8-ball before Kumar and Dodgers very own Anand combined to get them back in the game with some beefy smites. When both retired, Dodgers were able to reapply the brakes, first through Shimoga (NJ) and then through Lee and Shahin, the latter proving almost unplayable in the gathering gloom. With the run rate accelerating through unlikely, past improbable to finally come to rest at impossible Cap’n Carr finally came to the party and snaffled a wicket of the last ball, Dollin clinging onto one that steepled up a good six or seven feet into the night sky.

With a solid 29 run margin in the bag, Dodgers retired to the cornucopia of delights offered by the Kings School Bar to celebrate a rare clean sweep and to observe the real heroes of the day – the players on pitch C who were still going despite the fact it was not so much gloomy as night-time. Rumours that the end of the game was signalled by the umpire with the call “Over and Bedtime” are as yet unsubstantiated.

It's the day Phil McBarron reached his 7,000th run from 308 innings and he is also the highest run scorer for Dodgers.

Match report by McB:

An excellent win by Dodgers against strong opposition comprising 11 Asian regular weekend cricketers. Banished to the graveyard pitch D, Capt Carr won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Dollin and McB struggled to lay bat on ball against an opening swing bowling attack exploiting the rather uneven playing surface (the first 3 overs were maidens but no chuntering was to be heard from NJ). Gradually though Dollin found his feet and the tempo picked up and the score progressed beyond 50 at a respectable rate. The partnership was ended when McB was rather unluckily dismissed – drilling a non-trademark uppish drive straight at the cover fielder who facing a choice of catching the ball or decapitation opted for the former (unusually this was the only one of 9 Dodgers dismissals not clean bowled). During his innings McB passed the milestone of 7000 career Dodgers runs (DVD gift box sets of all his innings will be sent to Hatteea and Lee for them to enjoy over the long winter months). Dollin was dismissed just short of a well deserved 50 (cleaned up by a good very brisk nip-backer). A number of other Dodgers batters got half starts but it was left to Vijay to provide the main contribution and momentum to the second half of the innings – a well crafted innings of 41 including a towering six over long-on. With Extras contributing usefully a score of 201 for 9 off 35 overs was considered to be a good effort – the consensus being it was around 20 above par given the very long boundaries and uneven nature of the pitch.

Prem and NJ who have both played for the oppo were adamant that they were a stronger bowling than batting unit so Dodgers took to the field (after a sumptuous vegetarian sandwich buffet) with a degree of confidence and optimism. Excellent opening bowling from Anis and Vijay put the brakes on from the word go and the run rate climbed quickly. After one of the opening bats retired hurt with a muscle tear, Dodgers claimed wickets at regular intervals including a quite stunning run out of the remaining opener by Prem with a direct hit from the boundary. With half the side dismissed and the run rate climbing towards 10 an over it seemed Dodgers were home and hosed. But some lapses in both bowling and fielding and some controversial partial umpiring in respect of wides (the worst calls including some well-pitched away swingers from Prem and a ball from McB that missed leg stump by a coat of varnish) saw a shift in momentum as well as some acrimonious scenes between various players (think Shakoor Rana and Mike Gatting). A Dodgers loss would have been unjust and some excellent death bowling from NJ and Habib meant 16 were needed off the final over with 1 wicket remaining – the first ball was despatched down the throat of Vijay who took a well judged catch at long-off to seal the victory. Special mention must go to NJ who took another 4 wickets and is closing in on an astonishing 50 wickets for the season (having passed the 100 Dodgers wickets career milestone last week).

Belair Park
20 overs (25 retirement, 2 runs for wide/no ball and no extra ball except last over)
6pm
Bright & Sunny

Toss: Dodgers only had 6 to start with so by agreement batted first

Dodgers 158 for 4 (Shimoga (NJ) 28* of 18, Dollin 27* of 23 & Carr 19* of 19) Beat Tilberg regents 142 for 6 (Sultan 2/14, Shimoga (NJ) 1/10 & Khalid 1/30) of 19 & Khalid 26* of 31) by 1 run

MOM: Shimoga (NJ) 5, Carr 2, Khalid 2, Sultan 1 & Dollin 1

Dodgers were only 6 to start with at 6pm as 5 players delayed few working late and few coming from another afternoon game from Malden. Finally had our 11 by 7pm, we did well in getting 11 after 4 dropouts on the day, thanks to Dollin.

By agreement Dodgers batted first on an unpredictable Belair Park wicket with the small boundaries and put up a decent score. Tilberg started very strongly reaching 70 in 8 overs, thought they would finish the game in 15th overs. Then the main bowlers Shimoga (NJ) & Sultan entered and runs started drying up, in the end they needed 30 runs of 4 overs and managed to get only 14 runs. Dodgers needed this winning boost after the shambles in Sunday & Tuesday games.

MOM: Shahin 10 & Hanspal 1

Another afternoon loss for Dodgers...apart from the opening batsmen everyone played like a T20 game and failed to make as many runs as we did on Thursday. Suppose we are all exited about no retirement and make some big runs. Green Sox fielded really well and stopped at least 30 runs and we were that many short and never in that game. Congratulations to Shahin on his hat-trick but it came very late only when 6 runs needed to win of 5 overs.

Dodgers v Blue Marlins, 24.07.14

Chiswick
20 overs (30 retirement, 2 runs for wide/no ball and no extra ball except last over)
6pm
Bright & Sunny

Toss: Won by Blue Marlins and put Dodgers to bat first

Dodgers 168 for 6 (Shimoga (NJ) 33* of 25, Anand 30* of 23 & Khalid 29 of 21) beat Blue Marlins 114 for 10 (Shimoga (NJ) 3/17, Hilary 3/22, Anand 2/20 & Shahin 2/24) by 54 runs

MOM: Hilary 5, Anand 3 & Shimoga (NJ) 2

This was a great game of cricket, played in the best competitive spirit, that turned out in the end to be a comprehensive win for us over a Blue Marlins side bristling with talent. Once again, the fleeting return of distant ex-pat Simon Cousins to the Dodgers ranks was enough to catapult us to a famous victory.

The Marlins' tactic of putting Dodgers in to bat seemed to have paid off early on when Chris, Ravi and Shahin all fell to high quality pace bowling. To lose three such batsmen with just 17 on the board looked ominous, but the run rate was high from the start and Mike held his ground to steady the ship. The arrival of Vijay at the crease turned the innings in our favour, as he matched stout defensive shots with spectacular boundaries, quickly reaching the retirement score of 30. Khalid and NJ took on where Vijay had left off, scoring freely and running well between the wickets. By the time John and Simon came in to finish off the innings (both scoring at a strike rate of over 170 for their cameo performances) the damage had already been done. We posted a total of 168, our highest of the season, against a side packed with excellent bowlers.

Victory was by no means assured, however, as the Marlins were clearly all able batsmen and the outfield was lightning fast. It would require disciplined bowling to keep them below our total - and Simon supplied exactly this to open our attack. John found the ball swinging nicely from the other end and picked up three early wickets before Vijay and NJ pinned the batsmen back, capturing five more between them. Shahin mesmerised the tail with his mix of leg spin and flippers, bagging a brace of wickets for his own tally, and we were home with over 50 runs to spare. No report would be complete, however, without special mention of the stupendous one-handed catch taken behind the stumps by Mike off Vijay, a peach which will remain in the memory for a good while to come.

All in all, a very good comeback after the loss of the afternoon game against the Marlins at the beginning of the season. The Dodgers summer goes from strength to strength!

Dodgers v LT Dinos, 16.07.14

Chiswick
20 overs (25 retirement, 2 runs for wide/no ball and no extra ball except last over)
6pm
Overcast

Toss: Won by LT Dinos and elected to bat first

LT Dinos 139 for 5 (Khalid 2/26 & Kashyap 1/31) Beat Dodgers 138 for 6 (Malins 30* of 19 & Khalid 26* of 31) by 1 run

MOM: Malins 7, Khalid 2 & Shimoga (NJ) 1

It's 6pm and only 8 dodgers in the field, oppo has the same numbers. NJ went for the toss and no idea why he toss the coin in an away game! Lost the toss and had to field with only 8 + 1 borrowed fielders. Opening bowlers struggled to bowl to the field and oppo were cruising with 55 runs of 5 overs, it was looking like a 200 target. NJ & Ash managed to get the run rate under control and by 11th over we had the full 11 on the field. Dev's second spell was better than first but still went for more runs. Excellent fielding by Dan, NJ, Matt & David and there were many chances of run outs one of the direct hit from NJ was turned down. Finally first wicket came as a run out, after a good stop Matt through it to the wrong end but still a chance and Dollin safely thow the ball to bowler Dev who took the bails, good team work there. Dollin took a excellent catch behind the stumps in Nitesh's bowling. Khalid bowled well got two wickets plus a last ball run out too. Oppo scored quickly and 2 of the retired batsmen played really well, managed to put a very competitive score of 139 runs.

Dodgers has a very strong line up all the way to 11 and went to bat positively as we have posted/chased such scores comfortably this season. Dollin facing the first ball played a nice ground shot to mid off but turned down the single, next one is the same ball and the same shot but in the air and got caught at Mid off. Dan started slowly once he got his eye played an excellent innings Vijay & Matt gave him a good support but scored only 6 a piece. Guy & Khalid who went before David to keep the run rate ticking, started well and played some good shots but struggled a lot in the end to put bat on the ball...Khalid who scored with 162 strike rate last week only managed half of it today. David joined proceedings oppo had a good combination of one pace & a slow bowler each end struggled to rotate. In the end 22 of 18 balls only managed 4 runs of 18th over then 18 of 12, David get's out and Ash & Nitesh chasing 12 runs needed to win and 11 to tie of the last over. Only managed to get 10 runs in the end and lost by 1 run. Stephen who scored quick 25 also terrified our batsmen with the ball and the umpires for giving wide. I bet he haunted in Matt's dreams yesterday. Winning streak of 8 T20 wins/6 wins in a row has broken today...

Many factors contributing to this loss - 64 dot balls, poor opening bowling, 3 players turning up late had to field 8 overs with only 9 players and turning down singles on the last ball to get/keep the strike. Vijay Anand to play as a just batsman...

Dodgers v Superstars, 09.07.14

Imber Court
35 overs
2pm
Bright, Sunny & Windy

Toss: Won by Superstars CC and elected to bat first

Superstars 164 for 6 (Palmer 2/25, Shahin 2/35 & Shimoga (NJ) 1/18) Lost to Dodgers 166 for 6 (Shajib 40*, Shahin 39 & Dollin† 28) by 4 wickets with 5.4 overs remaining

MOM: Shahin 5, Shajib 4 & Shimoga (NJ) 2

This is the second afternoon win and a very convincing one. This's the first game and a first win of three matches towards the Ken Block Trophy for this year.

Dodgers had gone through many changes to get the final 11, three new players playing. JLaw & Saurabh supposedly playing had to make space for Naidu & Shajib. JLaw who was keen to make use of his day off (retired) and fancied to be an official umpire for the game. He made it look very professional...did the job really well, there were few questionable wides and an LBW - aren't they always! With some pep talk from Dollin all went well.

Dodgers started with usual Naidu and this years opener Palmer and both bowled really well. Naidu only conceded 8 runs of first 4 overs and Palmer going nicely taking pace of the ball and using pitch well, hard to bat on taken two important wickets. Shahin, Aneez, NJ & Shajib all bowled really well and economical in their fist spell. Rats were less than hundred by end of 29th over and we thought this is one of the low scoring game. Here comes the second spell all went wrong 2 overs of Naidu & last over of Shahin, those three overs went for 55 runs. Vijay went crazy and hit most of the runs in that period with few sixes and fours with backing from Meyler, lost two balls as well. In the end Rats managed to put on a respectable score of 164.

Dodgers had few injuries and McB not fancying to open. Looks like Dolin had no partner to open the batting with as none of the non bowlers fancied, Syed (replacing Aneez who had to leave early) got the lucky spot. Both played a good innings with some good looking shots. Ravi joined Dollin after the dismissal of Syed who tried to hit a six...all going well and there comes the LBW! next two McB & Mohan (LSE games hero) looking in good touch but didn't trouble the scorer much and Dollin joined the doughout after them. This year's find Shahin & a new comer Shajib played aggressively and put on a 49 run partner ship with Shahin scoring most of the runs, up until he went for his 4th six got caught at long on. NJ joining the proceedings with 40 runs to win from many overs, Shajib stepped up the game and hitting two sixes (again lost another two balls) and NJ playing a cheeky reverse sweep. All looking to finish nice and early with only 3 runs to win from 6 overs. Rats got their best bowler Gundry back on and all the fielders closing in. Gundry bowled on to the pads of NJ and he nudged it to fine leg for a four scoring the winning runs...

Dodgers CC v LSE 2 July 2014Berrylands
35 overs
2pm
Bright & Sunny

Toss: Won by LSE CC and elected to bat

LSE 240 for 5 (Shahin 3/13 & Syed 1/20) Lost to Dodgers 244 for 6 (Mohan 92 of 75, Shahin 62* of 42 & Shimoga (NJ) 34* of 18) by 4 wickets with 10 balls remaining

MOM: Shahin 7 & Mohan 4

Jatinder Mohan was timing it so well it was delight to watch from the best spot (umpiring), just unlucky to get out on 92! Exceptional performance by Shahin with both ball & bat, his leg spin was unplayable. One of the best chases resulted in a WIN, Click here for the previous one.

Match report by JC2

On a scorching hot day in SW London suburbia the Mighty Dodgers assembled by various means of transport including train, cycle and car for the annual match versus the LSE Staff at their impressive Berrylands facility. Not for the first time, proceedings got underway 30 minutes late. Dodgers lost the toss and were predictably asked to field. The flat track and still conditions didn’t offer the most promising conditions and as the seam attack of Cooper and Hassan was dispatched to all corners our worst fears seemed to materialise. Before 10 overs had passed Cap’n Carr’s prediction of a 300 total did not seem too far-fetched!

LSE’s openers retired after making a fifty a piece with some robust hitting. Dodgers exercised various slower bowling options during the middle period of the innings. Most impressive was the very tricky legspin of newcomer Shahin who took 3-28 and was at one point on a hat-trick. The LSE middle order offered plenty of aerial chances but these chances did not stick. One notable exception was an excellent take in the deep by Habib off NJ who put in a solid 1-35 stint. The run rate was stemmed and LSE totalled 240 (including 33 extras) after 35 overs.

Following the tea break, Dodgers openers McBarron and Mohan started determinedly and ensured that the scoring rate kept us in touch. Phil unluckily snicked one to the keeper for 9 but Jatinder was by this time starting to get his eye in and hit some impressive boundaries. Hassan, in at 3, was scoring quickly but his big hit to midwicket was spectacularly caught and he fell for 17 when more seemed likely. Westhead in at 4 never really got settled and made only 2. Fortunately, at the other end Jatinder had really got his eye in and the Dodgers scoring rate was around 6 an over at the mid-way stage. Things really got moving though when Shahin joined him at the crease following the demise of Syed for 11. He showed true all-rounder credentials with some fluid strokes and the pair put on 67 for the fifth wicket.

It was all going jolly well and Dodgers looked certain to coast to victory when Jatinder was given out lbw in, er, controversial circumstances by umpire Westhead. Habib replaced Jatinder but could not get going and it was a blessing in disguise when he fell on 4 to bring in NJ to partner the still-strong Shahin with the score on 192 with Dodgers needing 49 to win. The pair shared the strike well and kept the scoreboard ticking over with regular boundaries bringing the required rate down to eventually less than one a ball. The scores were eventually levelled at the end of the 33rd over and NJ hit the winning four a couple of balls later. And thus the first afternoon victory of the Dodgers’ season was recorded.

Shahin was Man of the Match for his combined 62 not out and 3 wickets.
