Match report: JH

The season's second defeat came hot on the heels of the first, and in even more comprehensive fashion. Having been put in to bat, the Dragons set about the Dodgers bowling with murderous intent from the start, smacking anything wide to the boundary and taking singles off every other delivery. Worse still was their contemptuous habit of regularly running two when the ball went straight to a Dodgers fielder - and not just those in the deep. This was an object lesson in how to set a competitive total from the outset, and even if a couple of plum LBW calls had gone our way, it would have done little to stem the flow of runs.

The Dodgers response was strangled at birth, largely due to the exceptional bowling of the Dragons opener Kotecha (4-2-13-6). New blood Dawes showed exemplary sportsmanship by walking to a fine edge, while TQ stood immobile in disbelief at being bowled off his own box. McB, NJ and Prem all came and went, leaving Marsh, Gray and Hilary to restore some Dodgers pride with a bout of hard hitting. The best was left til last, however, as the Cat posted an unbeaten 13 to close out our innings in style, if not in victory.

Dodgers suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of a Treasury side that chased down our score as zealously as if it had been a government department overspend. Nice knocks by Neil, Phil and NJ looked to have given us something to bowl at, even if our early innings run rate still needs addressing, but the HMT response started strong and got steadily stronger. Tom and NJ kept them pinned down in the first few overs, but a lightning swift outfield meant that our change bowlers were treated less kindly. We were honestly beaten by a better team.

Match report: JH

Dodgers win again! Great batting from Mike Dollin and star signing Tom Marsh made light work of the Stingers attack until both retired with their 25s safely under their respective belts, leaving the field to McBarron and the OBE. The run rate dropped somewhat, but McB was swift to register his own 25 and leave the field to NJ, who rounded off the Dodgers innings with a couple of pleasant knocks.

The Stingers had a couple of promising batsmen, but Hassan and Naidu pinned them down throughout the first eight overs. Only one (the Antipodean who had reportedly played international indoor cricket) made it to retirement at 25, leaving Fox and Hilary a gentle bowl at some neophyte batsmen (and one batswoman). NJ and Captain Carr finished off neatly, but no report would be complete without due mention of the TWO stumpings bagged by the Cat. Matt Prior, beware!

10 wicket win for Dodgers! (well 9 to be precise because we only had 10 players). They got 99 for 5 off 18 overs. NJ, Fox bowled particularly well. In reply Matt (one glorious 6), Dollin (one particularly lovely legside shot and a great catch), Priest (one super straight drive bisecting two fielders) all got their 25 not outs. And I hit the winning 3 runs – thanks for running them JC! So we were 100-0!

Match report: JH

Dodgers secured a second convincing win of the season in our first afternoon game, thanks to an all-round performance to which everyone contributed. Dodgers won the toss and elected to bat first on a grassy wicket that still bore the feel of many weeks' rain. McBarron and Priest provided a solid opening before Neil became the first of a number of top order batsmen to misjudge the speed of the pitch (or absence thereof). He was swiftly joined back at the pavilion by McB and Taylor, each of whom top-edged pulls. The star performance of the innings came from NJ, registering his maiden Dodgers half-century with a mixture of deft cuts and hearty sixes. Carr and Hilary added 40 more between them, before leaving the field to Bennett and Gray to close out the innings with some delightful hitting.

A total of 165 felt a little light for 35 overs, even if the clammy outfield was still frustrating anything hit along the floor. Yet the Dodgers bowling attack started magnificently, with the tightest of spells from new bloods Prem (7 overs for just 16) and Gray (ditto for 26). The run rate rose slightly with the first change of bowling, but NJ bagged the crucial wicket of Weasels star batsman Michaels, who has helped himself to more runs off us in the past than we would care to remember. Once Taylor had taken an excellent catch in the deep to remove the other Weasels opener, we were on our way. More tight bowling, admirable keeping by the Cat and another steepling catch by Prem at long on saw us home with runs to spare.

Match report: JH

Dodgers got the season off to a fine start with a convincing win over the Ministry of Justice. We chased down a target of 95 fairly comfortably, on a pitch still struggling to dry out after months of torrential drought. Tight Dodgers bowling (Hassan going for only 9 off 4) backed by excellent catching meant that an under-strength MOJ failed to post a high enough total. Strong showings from Lindsey and Hatteea, plus a crepuscular cameo from Hilary, saw us home.

The game was memorable (a) for Michael Dollin's sad demise as he was clean bowled attempting to sweep a donkey drop on his very first ball of the season - returning to the boundary, our normally phlegmatic opener smashed to pieces the innocent plastic box that holds the flags; and (b) more happily, the occasion of Guy Westhead's 1,000th Dodgers run. Congratulations to the OBE!

Match report: Lee the Senior

The Dodgers season kicked off at The Oval and the team started as they meant to go on: By the 6pm start time only Lee and Matthews were present. At the current rate of attrition of Dodgers bowlers this could well be the opening bowling attack by the first game of the season. Lee invited Matthews to take first knock, explaining that half an hour of facing the Cat's bowling was not an attractive proposition.

The Cat began cautiously, deploying his trademark prod to great effect and pacing himself carefully for a potentially lengthy thirty minute knock which would have been his longest since his famous last wicket stand with Gilbert Jessop in 1902. To everyone's relief NJ sidled in and proceeded to bowl in a fleece, claiming that it was cold despite the sweltering rain forest-esque conditions of the indoor school. He was swiftly followed by the perennially cheerful Hilary. As the bowling attack diversified, Matthews demonstrated that his winter had been spent developing a wide range of new shots - the poke was added to the prod and we even saw the lesser-spotted nurdle. Rumours that Eoin Morgan was on his way over to learn a few things proved unfounded.

Bennett finally graced us with his presence and was immediately dispatched into the cauldron of the batting end of the nets where he played shots all around the wicket and all in the air. Hilary was already demonstrating that his hold on the bowling trophy was going to be hard to prise away, bowling a succession of half-volleys so juicy that the Man from Del Monte was spotted nodding approvingly from the back of the hall. With Bennett's time at the crease almost up, Hilary surveyed the terrifying bowling attack, donned his full protective gear and strode in. Conditions were tricky by now with spin twins NJ and the Cat probing away on very full lengths (in Cat's case, often waist-high), Bennett nibbling it around and Lee exploring the middle of the track.

Lee came in at four with a winter of Friday nets fully in evidence as he was dismissed more often than the England middle-order facing a semi-competent club spinner. A few meaty clubs in the direction of the agricultural pastures redressed the balance before NJ brought up the rear with a curious knock which started aggressive and got progressively more cautious until by the end it was virtually the full McBarron.

The local hostelry didn't benefit from any post-match trade as everyone departed swiftly, Hilary particularly smug that his wife was picking him up.

Match report: JH

An emphatic win over old rivals the Rats provided a pleasant end to the Dodgers 2011 season. Having been asked to bowl, our pace attack restricted them from the start. Cousins rounded off this chapter of his Dodgers career with the controlled parsimony that we have come to expect of him, and showed just what we will be missing next season when he is on the other side of the planet. Ford recovered from some early tonking to capture the wickets of both openers. Hilary and McBarron bowled tidily enough, but it was the injection of Rob Fox into the attack that really put paid to the Rats' chances, as his 4 for 17 earned him a well deserved man of the match.

Our batting line-up had strength in depth, but in the absence of the retire-at-25 rule, only three were required. Taylor and Dollin kept up with the rate right from the off until Matt was bowled trying to work one to leg. Hatteea took his place and pushed on swiftly, with a cracking square cut to the boundary followed by an even more exquisite straight drive to long off. Not to be outdone, Dollin lifted a delightful six over long extra cover to hasten Dodgers to an easy victory. We passed the required total at a canter, with more than three overs to spare.

Many jugs of ale and lager followed (plus free ginger beer courtesy of the bar) as Dodgers looked back over a season that had started well, stuttered later and perked up right at the end. We will hand over the Ken Block trophy to Superstars in light of their two earlier victories against us, but we will return next year a more experienced, battle-hardened squad.

Match Report by Matt Taylor

Some despondency hung over the Dodgers following recent defeats, but they competed strongly until the final third of this tie.

Losing the toss and taking to the field, Dodgers had only nine, but were soon boosted by a wandering Gigg.

Shimoga and Zaheer opened effectively despite bombastic batting from Agricola's opener/wicketkeeper/captain - restricting the oppo to five an over and taking a wicket apiece. NJ bowled the same as he heaved and Zaheer had his replacement, a dangerous saffer, caught by Taylor in the deep.

Carr and Taylor stepped in to the bowling breach. The latter had batsmen caught at point by Fox from his first ball, lbw to his third and dropped by a diving Westhead off his fourth. Neil Benn and his Poisson Distribution breathed a sigh of relief.

Economical and backed up by good fielding, Fox and Carr stood out off the last ten as Dodgers restricted the oppo to 108. Five-and-a-bit an over. Straightforward, surely?

Sadly, it wasn't, as a steady stream of Dodgers couldn't adapt to the pitch and accurate bowling. Hatteea was caught at long on just as he was imposing himself, Dollin snicked to the chuntering keeper and Gigg chopped on after some choice strokes. Taylor was more adhesive but watched Westhead caught at mid-off and Zaheer, Shimoga and Fox bowled by Yorkers.

Even as Carr strode to the crease with 34 required off 4 overs, the Dodgers were in the game. But acceleration was beyond them. Carr nurdled but was caught, The Cat was beaten outside off stump, Taylor was dropped three times.

Dreams of 22 off the last over were quickly extinguished and your reporter was finally caught off the last ball, heaving to long off. A galling defeat - but a strong performance in the field gave the Dodgers hope for the season's last two fixtures, where the batting will surely come good.

The beer still tasted good, although senior members were seen drinking lager in a shocking break with orthodoxy.

Gaddafi was nowhere to be seen.

Match report: JH

Another loss for Dodgers, again resulting from our failure to put enough runs on the board when batting first. The Treasury had brought along a varied attack, with one opening bowler managing successive wicket maidens and the other sending down nothing but wides. Dodgers continued to struggle, and HMT then unleashed a genuine pace bowler who saw off the other top order batsmen. On a lush outfield we managed only one boundary, and even off just 18 overs a total of 87 was never going to be sufficient. Despite pretty good bowling and fielding on our part, Treasury made it home with time to spare.

Let the game be remembered for the moment that Simon Cousins became the sixth player in Dodgers history to notch up 100 club wickets. Congratulations, Simon. You are now one of the sporting elite.
