The first game of the 2013 Dodgers season was played on the Buckhurst Hill higher ground, the lower being waterlogged after all the winter rain. Stand-in captain McBarron lost the toss and we were sent into the field. Prem and John Gray opened our attack with great economy, but the dull pitch meant that wickets were hard to come by and it took a fine catch by new signing Dan Saunders at square leg to break the deadlock. Our other newcomer Ranjit Menon showed both pace and accuracy as first change, and was unfortunate to be denied a clear caught-behind which both batsman and square leg umpire acknowledged should have been given out. Bennett (in his first spell) and Hilary were more expensive, but picked up a brace of wickets apiece before Saunders and Shimoga were brought on to close out the innings, NJ providing three especially tight overs.Our fielding was impressive for so early in the season, with six agile catches to back up the bowlers, and exceptional wicket keeping by Hatteea. We had certainly left ourselves in with a chance.
Under the agreed timing, Dodgers had one hour and 20 overs to close down the total of 165, which in the end equated to little more than 4 an over. Dollin and McB opened in fine style until Mike spooned one back to the bowler on 10. Our forward progress then suffered a serious blow when Hatteea was controversially adjudged lbw (your humble correspondent will henceforth confine himself to scoring, not umpiring). Lindsey joined McB in the middle to steer us back on course before departing to an extraordinary one-handed running catch at extra cover, and the run rate was still no more than 6 an over as we went into the final 20. This would have been eminently achievable had it not been for the crack young Buckhurst spinner Sam, who proceeded to tease and, ultimately, despatch a lower order which scored quickly enough but needed to muster more resistance. Phil's determined 44 was a shining example to all those of us who are more prone to give away our wickets too cheaply.
