Dodgers 105 for 4 (Taylor 32) tied with Superstars 105 for 3 (Mendelsohn 2/12 & Naidu 1/32). Or did they?
MoM: Taylor - 6 & Mendelsohn - 5
May 23rd 2012, Chiswick. Dodgers set a total. Superstars tie the game on the last ball in controversial circumstances. May 23rd 2013: history repeats itself, a year to the day since 'Foxygate'.
Dodgers elected to bat and steady progress was made by Dollin and Law. Acceleration from Hatteea and Mendelson was fleeting; TQ stuck around for a handy nurdle. Superstars had bowled well and it took some late fireworks from Taylor to propel Dodgers just beyond 100.
The old rivals started well despite the best efforts of Prem and rapid debutant Kashya. But Mendelson struck back with an outstanding 4-0-2-12 and Khalid's spin slowed things further. The required rate crept up from 6 to 8 into the final overs despite some old fashioned Dodgers fielding as Gaught was dropped more than once. Khalid clung on to a tough one in the deep to remove Anand, so NJ had to defend 7 off the last over.
Four were required from the last ball, now amid near darkness and a fierce hailstorm. Taylor hurled Gaught's drive safely back from deep cover to Hatteea as the batsmen completed two.
Those avid fans of Dodgers history will doubtless expect to follow a sorry tale of overthrows; torrents of invective; and a player never to be seen again. But at this point the paths of history diverge.
Gaught remained in his ground at the striker's end after the second run as his partner optimistically sauntered down the wicket to join him. Hatteea was having none of this and removed first the bails; then a stump; then the whole assembly - lest there should be any doubt that he had broken the wicket. As soon as Gaught's partner had made his ground, Gaught himself took a jog to the non-striker's end and safely completed a third run; with it claiming to have tied the match.
The day following this match saw a lengthy email trail develop, covering most of laws 23, 29 and 38. Being written by Civil Servants it was of course, completely unintelligible. But the general consensus was that the tie should stand; so there remains startling historical symmetry.
N.B. to see last year's eerily similar result:
