Dodgers lose on last ball
A great September afternoon's cricket, with two games for the price of one against the friendly Blue Marlins. The first, originally billed as 40 overs, failed to go the distance, as the Marlins were skittled out for just 60. Top honours go to Dan Saunders, who secured his place in the Dodgers hall of fame with an excellent five-wicket hall, and good fielding backed up the bowlers throughout (including two neat catches by Mike 'Bucket Hands' Dollin at slip). Openers Dollin and Westhead looked set to polish off the runs between them, but we managed to lose a flurry of wickets when just two short of the victory post. However, the contest was over so quickly that we agreed to turn round for a T20 rematch.
Dodgers went in first this time, with the batting order remodelled to give everyone a go. Sacha set about the Marlins' bowling with a will, notching up a swift 42 before yorking himself. Grant, on his debut for us, had been yorked for a golden duck in the first game, but showed his class this time around with an excellent collection of shots (before retiring due to 'exhaustion'). With contributions from NJ, Phil, Vijay, JH and Dan we made it up to the 145 mark before repairing to the pavilion for tea. Given the Marlins' form in the 40-over match, the odds were on our side.
As soon as JH and Dan opened our bowling, however, it was clear that this was going to be a very different game. Both went for a shedload of runs, with the Marlins peppering the boundary from the start. Only once the openers had been dismissed did we manage to peg them back, with NJ, Vijay and Phil doing sterling work to force the required run rate up into double figures. With 30 needed to win off the last three overs, we were surely in the driving seat - but it was not to be. A flurry of boundaries in the last over saw them reach our total with one ball to spare. The field closed in to prevent the all-important single that would take them over the winning line, but the Marlins bat had other ideas, lofting it far over the midwicket boundary for a final six. Disappointing though it was for us to lose from such a strong position, the Marlins had sportingly lent us two fielders throughout the match, without whom we'd have gone down much earlier. All in all, justice was done.
