Buckhurst Hill
35 overs
2pm
Dry, sunny in parts
Toss: Won by Buckhurst Hill and elected to Bat first.
Buckhurst Hill 200 for 5 (Shimoga (NJ) 2/24, Hillary 2/30 & Anand 1/17) beat Dodgers 183 for 7 (Shimoga (NJ) 61, McBarron 39 & Anand 25) by 17 runs
MOM: Shimoga (NJ) 10 & McBarron 1
The opening game of the 2014 Dodgers season defied the Met Office's grim forecasts and gave us a pleasant afternoon's cricket at the Buckhurst Hill upper ground. Tight bowling from Prem and Jason started us off well and our fielding was secure throughout, but BH opener Hermes was soon despatching us to all corners in a blinding innings of 158 not out. Only the most curmudgeonly commentator would ruminate on what might have been had he fallen to the stumping chance when in his 50s...
The total of 200+ still seemed well within reach at just 6 an over, but the rapid departure of our top order batsmen to some very slow and bounceless bowling turned the game against us. Phil and Vijay stopped the rot before Shimoga (NJ) treated us to a sparkling innings, including three sixes, but we were now too far behind the run rate and the lower order sacrificed themselves in a lost cause. Once again a strong Dodgers side lost when we should really have won, but the rest of the season will surely redeem us.
The match was notable for two Dodgers milestones. Thanks to a rank long hop botched by the batsman, John H became the first player in club history to take 200 wickets. Less embarrassingly, Sacha passed the 1,000 run mark and is now threatening to overtake Sir Guy Westhead in the all time rankings.
Note: As per score card 200 but the opposition some how got 210!
