Toss: Won by Blue Marlins and put Dodgers to bat first
Dodgers 168 for 6 (Shimoga (NJ) 33* of 25, Anand 30* of 23 & Khalid 29 of 21) beat Blue Marlins 114 for 10 (Shimoga (NJ) 3/17, Hilary 3/22, Anand 2/20 & Shahin 2/24) by 54 runs
MOM: Hilary 5, Anand 3 & Shimoga (NJ) 2
This was a great game of cricket, played in the best competitive spirit, that turned out in the end to be a comprehensive win for us over a Blue Marlins side bristling with talent. Once again, the fleeting return of distant ex-pat Simon Cousins to the Dodgers ranks was enough to catapult us to a famous victory.
The Marlins' tactic of putting Dodgers in to bat seemed to have paid off early on when Chris, Ravi and Shahin all fell to high quality pace bowling. To lose three such batsmen with just 17 on the board looked ominous, but the run rate was high from the start and Mike held his ground to steady the ship. The arrival of Vijay at the crease turned the innings in our favour, as he matched stout defensive shots with spectacular boundaries, quickly reaching the retirement score of 30. Khalid and NJ took on where Vijay had left off, scoring freely and running well between the wickets. By the time John and Simon came in to finish off the innings (both scoring at a strike rate of over 170 for their cameo performances) the damage had already been done. We posted a total of 168, our highest of the season, against a side packed with excellent bowlers.
Victory was by no means assured, however, as the Marlins were clearly all able batsmen and the outfield was lightning fast. It would require disciplined bowling to keep them below our total - and Simon supplied exactly this to open our attack. John found the ball swinging nicely from the other end and picked up three early wickets before Vijay and NJ pinned the batsmen back, capturing five more between them. Shahin mesmerised the tail with his mix of leg spin and flippers, bagging a brace of wickets for his own tally, and we were home with over 50 runs to spare. No report would be complete, however, without special mention of the stupendous one-handed catch taken behind the stumps by Mike off Vijay, a peach which will remain in the memory for a good while to come.
All in all, a very good comeback after the loss of the afternoon game against the Marlins at the beginning of the season. The Dodgers summer goes from strength to strength!
