Sunny and warm
Toss: won by Dodgers, who elected to bat
Dodgers 311 for 5 (Malins 189* of 107 & Ridwan 40* of 27) Lost to Bengal Troopers 312 for 6 (Hasan 2/43 & Ridwan 2/67) in last over
MOM: Malins 8 & Hasan 1
A simply extraordinary game played in late summer sunshine against a very sporting bunch of lads who generously lent us three of their players (and who also deserve our thanks for the excellent picnic tea).
Dan (Malins) opened the batting for Dodgers together with guest opener Hassan, and both soon began to enjoy the true bounce of the artificial pitch, speeding along at 7 an over from the start. Eventually Hassan was caught swinging at a wide one and Guy soon succumbed to a horribly inevitable stumping, while NJ and the other Dan (Saunders) also fell to good catches. Following the dismissal of Captain Carr, our second guest Redwan went out to the middle and began to score with abandon. Yet the story of the afternoon was the incredible knock of Dan M, who proceeded to smash the previous Dodgers record for an individual score by notching up a staggering 189 not out. By the end of the innings Dan was hitting sixes off almost every ball, and at one point could almost have bagged a double ton. His heroics took our total to a record-beating 311 off just 35 overs, and a certain victory.
All certainty is illusion. Incredible though our total was, the ability of Dodgers to lose from totally impregnable positions is more incredible yet. We were tonked to all corners of the field by almost every one of the Bengal Troopers, and badly let down by some decidedly sub-standard fielding as the day wore on. In truth, no one could quite bring themselves to believe that two teams might get more than 300 in the same afternoon, but this was indeed to be our fate. With just 5 needed off the final over, the Troopers won with four balls to spare. The only consolation was that they had played the game in the nicest spirit, and it will be a pleasure to give them a rematch next year.
