Dodgers website restructuring

Eagle-eyed Dodgers will have spotted that the Dodgers website has a slightly different address now - play.dodgerscricket.org. This is thanks to those chaps at Google/Blogger changing the way in which Blogger blogs can be published to the web.

Nothing else has changed! And if you plug in the old address you will be re-routed to the new address. Simples!

Player Profile - Rob Cooper

Rob Cooper joined Dodgers in 2009 via the TQ/Warwick Castle connection as part of the ongoing Dodgers Youth (i.e. under-40) Policy. He immediately took the eye with his stylish (and highly competent) batting and bowling and sure enough won Best Bowler at a canter. Good things are expected of Rob in 2010.

Player Profile - John Cooper

John CooperJohn is rightly revered for his excellent organisational skills and the marvellous (and newly-restructured and hosted) Dodgers website. His wank batting, dodgy fielding and pisspoor accountancy prove he is human though (although in 2009 thus far there was a certain improvement)...

Player Profile - David Pope

David PopeSaqlain Mushtaq has a dart; Muttiah Muralitharan has a Doosra; Shane Warne has a Zooter. But none of them has anything as potent a weapon as David Pope's speciality ball - the Doobler. It pitches on off stump drawing the batsman forward, then pitches again on middle-and-off, forcing the batsman into an ungainly swipe across the line, then hits middle.

A desperately reluctant batsman, he has struggled in the field except for one sublime moment in the 2001 season when he trapped the ball at mid off a la Tony Currie, then stooped and threw down the stumps in one sweep. The batsman hasn't stopped shaking since. David is feared and revered in places as far apart as Buckhurst Hill and Croydon.

We were all sad when David hung up his Dodgers boots in 2009 so those who took up that bet (a double with Russell Brand to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury) with Ladbrokes on him taking his first catch are gonna be SOL*.

David was honoured with the prestigious Life Membership at the AGM in 2009.

Rceived from Sian Priest & Guy Westhead.

Minutes of the last AGM

These were made available to all present (as well as having been published on the website), & there were no matters arising.

Captain's Report

The season’s match statistics were that the Dodgers won 11, tied 1, & lost 12 games. This was a good come back after losing the first 5 games, & there were a few cancellations for various reasons. Dodgers strength in depth was increased this season, with some welcome additions to the team, namely Sacha Hateea, Rob Cooper & Peter Lee Junior (no relation to Peter Lee Senior) however, we do need to improve our all-round fielding. Phil McBarron scored over 550 runs, with the highlight being his maiden Dodgers ton, although Sacha led the averages with 60 & John Cooper was the leading wicket taker with 15. Overall, we had a reasonably good year & also won a trophy in the Civil Service 6-a-side tournament (jointly shared with the Superstars).

Finance Report

The Treasurer John Cooper gave his report, & as at November 2009 the Dodgers account was in credit by £665. This represented a profit of £139 over the year, after various loan repayments. The Dodgers membership fee will remain at £10 each & there were 25 paid up members in 2008, an increase of 6 from last year. £250 in membership fees & £965 in match fees were collected during the year. The full accounts will be made available soon by the Treasurer for auditing by Franca, & they will be shown to the Committee at its next meeting in 2010.

Election of Officers for 2010

The following were elected unopposed standing for the posts as indicated:

John Carr (Captain)
Neil Priest (Vice-Captain)
Phil McBarron (Chairman)
John Cooper (Treasurer)
Robert Fox (Secretary)
Kim Matthews (Fixture Secretary)
Peter Lee Snr. (Committee Member without Portfolio)

Thanks were recorded for all the Committee's efforts during the past year.

Subscription, Match & Net Fees for 2010

It was agreed that these will stay the same as last year as follows:

- Dodgers Membership = £10.00
- Evening Match (No Tea) = £3.50
- Afternoon Match (No Tea) = £4.00
- Afternoon Match (With Tea) = £5.00
- Evening Nets @ The Oval = £5.00.

Away fees will be the same as those of Home games.

Selection Policy for 2010

It was agreed that nobody should have to miss 2 games in a row that they are available for, except for the few "higher profile" games where the opposition are particularly strong. This will be proportioned to general availability, to try & prevent any last minute withdrawals. A reserves list will also be in operation. Nobody will open both the batting & the bowling to give everyone a fair game.

Recruitment & Website

The Dodgers website www.dodgerscricket.org is maintained by John Cooper, who was thanked for his efforts. The domain name is billed bi-annually has been paid for until August 2011. Hosting is billed annually and is paid for until August 2010. The website has the relevant details for anyone interested in joining up. Word of mouth recruitment is also helpful, as only about 5% of new recruits came via the posters put up around the various Govt. buildings. Any Match reports & blogs will be very welcome next season, & are easy to upload apparently. Anyone interested in contributing should contact JC2. A proposal that the Man of the Match should write the match report was discussed and was generally thought to be a good idea.

2010 Fixtures

Kim Matthews has taken on the role of Fixture Secretary again & thanks were given to him for all his sterling work in organising the fixtures. He mentioned that the coming year would be his final one as Fixture Secretary, and asked for a volunteer to help him this year to enable a smooth transition next year.

The fixtures for the coming year are likely to be similar to those of last year, but a few new ones are planned. The possibility of playing more games at other grounds (e.g. Barnes Common or Fullers), given that Chiswick will be reduced to 3 pitches & no bar next season, is also being investigated.

Equipment Purchases

A full equipment audit will be undertaken during the close season; however, a complete new set of batting gear will be purchased for next season, as well as boxes of red & white balls. Pete Lee Senior also has a helmet people can borrow as well. A locker will also be made available for use to store equipment in at Great Minster House (DfT building) for away games etc.

Closed Season Activities & Other Social Events

Nets have been booked for various dates next March & April 2010 & JC2 take bookings for spaces in January. Pre-Christmas drinks in the Cask Pub at Pimlico on 17 December have been arranged.

2009 Player Awards

Player of the Season: Simon Cousins
Top Batsman: Sacha Hatteea
Top Bowler: Rob Cooper
Best Fielder: Matthew Taylor
Most Improved Player: Mike Dollin
Champagne Moment: 6-a-side team sharing winning the DfT/CLG Civil Service inter-departmental Tournament.

Any Other Business

It was proposed (by Neil Priest) & seconded (by John Carr) that David Pope should be elected a life member of the Dodgers Club, on account of his unique contribution to the club over many years, for which he was thanked by everyone present. David announced earlier this season that unfortunately he had to retire from Cricket for health reasons. He will be missed, & hopefully he will still be able come & watch games next season.

Dodgers have unanimously agreed to give £100 to Superstars for a trophy or shield to be purchased in memory of Ken Block, one of their stalwarts who tragically passed away earlier this year. It will be played for in a special game between us & Superstars every season, with former colleagues of his invited.

No Dodgers Cricket Tour took place in 2009 as there was not enough interest, however, the Superstars team is hoping to tour over the early May Bank Holiday weekend in 2010 (venue TBC), & anyone interested in going should contact Barry Gigg.

Date of Next Committee Meeting

It was proposed to hold the next Dodgers Committee Meeting on 2 March 2010 (after nets) at the Hanover Arms, near the Oval.

Player Profile - Guy Westhead OBE

Guy van der WestheadGuy has two trademarks: an inability to play forward to any delivery and the ability to hit the top of the net when we're practising at The Oval... when he's bowling.

Guy has a South African cousin (Guy van der Westhead) who replaces him sporadically. This year it was for his own invitational XI.

Guy received an OBE in 2006 but no-one knows what for.

Is not inclined to stand on ceremony despite his SCS grade and OBE and is happy to be addressed as Guv, Gaffer or Boss by his grateful teammates.

Guy's Top Ten Favourite Bands

Guy says - My top 10 favourite artists roughly in order are:

Slade
Gary Numan
Nena
B52s
Buzzcocks
Stranglers
Oasis
Muse

OK, so that is only 8! I'd have more difficulty narrowing it down after that.
